We have a Baby Yorkie who is 4 months old. We got him around a month ago. At first, he had both ears down and looked normal. A week or so passed and he kept his right ear up and left ear down, and now he has left ear up and right ear down. He is well and is doing fine, its just he keeps one ear up and one down, whats going on?!

He's teething, it's normal for the ears to do funny things while a pup is teething.

However, it's a good idea to consult with the breeder.

try using a small styrafoam cup and gently taping his ear up to it. The reason your puppy's ear is flopping is because the fragile cartilage in his ears is breaking down. This could be caused by him scratching at his ears, playfighting with your other dog, or from you petting his ears. Also, some puppies are just going to have floppy ears, same as human characteristics (big nose, green eyes, you get the idea) As said already, you could have his ears cropped, but that involves cutting a chunk of his ear off in a v-shape. The remaining ear is then stitched back together, causing it to stand up, it also removes some weight from the ear. However, cropping the ears isnt a guarentee they will stand up. Sometimes, during the surgury, the cartilage is damaged anway, meaning the ear will never stand up. Also, some puppy's ears arn't even big enough to crop as there wouldn't be enough to stitch back together afterwards. Either way, it's your choice (depending upon your states laws, it's legal anywhere in Canada), but be sure to think about the unnecissary pain your pupply will go through if you do decide to crop. I would certainly leave his ears alone and try to prop them up yourself before taking the more drastic approach. good luck :)

When certain dog breeds are puppies and start teething, they lose calcium from the rest of their bodies. This weakens the cartilige in their ears and causes them to drop. As their teeth finish forming, around 4-6 months, the calcium levels balance out and the ears will stand erect. You can speed up the process by adding cottage cheese (about one tablespoon) to the dog's food every day. This boosts the calcium and will allow the teeth to form and ears to stand at the same time. My Papillon puppy did the same thing, he was born with upright ears, dropped one ear at 10 weeks, dropped the other ear at 12 weeks, at about 13 weeks the first ear came back up, and at 14 weeks the second ear came back up, and they've both stayed up ever since. I used the cottage cheese trick, and the ear came up within a few days. Give it a shot!

One of our Australian terrier had this problem. Aussie are known for their puke ears. After enough time wen’t by, we know we had a real problem. There was a point that we know we had to do something. I contacted our breeder to see if it was normal = no! and then our vet who refereed me to a person who help solve the problem. This is what we did:
(1) Shaved the hair off the ears to make it lighter.
(2) We cleaned the ear to remove all the grease and wax from the inside. This part is important. They need to be real clean.
(3) Then used ‘Breathe Right’ strips and attach them to the inside of the ear to make them stand up
(4) We replaced the strips daily, but in a few days they stood up on their own, and that was three years ago.

He is teething. Changes in the jaw also affect the cartilage in the ears. The ears may both drop, both be up, or one up and one down. They will return to both standing up before the pup is 6 months old.

Our Westie pup had this problem, too - the breeder suggested you just wrap a little piece of masking tape around the ear that's folded down - worked great after about a week. Usually it will resolve itself, though.

I have a border collie that is 6 months old now and he did the same thing. When we got him he had them both down, then his right one was up, then they were both up but there both down again now. I think this is normal. It may just be thse muscles developing.

Their ears go up and down throughout teething. Don't worry, he's absolutely fine. As soon as he is done teething, they will both stand up.
