I am an atheist living in West Michigan and the county officials say the Lord's Prayer before each board meeting.

They get away with this because of the overwhelming christian majority in the county.
The point is, if someone who does not go to any church tried to get elected as a county official, he would not stand a snowball's chance in hell.

Same thing goes where you are. They think they own the place because you are in a tiny, tiny minority.

I'm not sure, but I believe the PTA is not strictly affiliated with the school. It is a separate, non-public organization. As for the fliers, technically that is wrong, but if it is a small community I wouldn't get too upset over it. I would expect them to also allow the distribution of non-religious organizations' fliers as well.

Schools should not be promoting any non-school organizations, though. If they do that, I'm sure there is religion in classes, so I'd just check into what your kids are learning in school once in a while (I mean beyond normal parental oversight).

They can do it because in the strict sense of the word a lot of Texas is a ghetto. You have a large group of people who share a common ethnicity and religious background.
So if they pray to Jesus at a PTA meeting held in a public school who's going to complain about it ? According to them it's simply a case of no harm , no foul.
If you complain about it , your complaint will be duly noted and nothing will get done except of course that social pressures may lead you to reconsider your decision to live in Texas. Once you leave the status quo will be restored and the people of your town will be able to practice their version of American democracy as they see fit.

The deep south is the same, for their religious ways. If the schools started doing that, I would throw a fit. Just remember that your child still has to go to that school and has to deal with the other children. Sad but true. Any time that I meantion I'm an atheist, people totally avoid me like I have the plague. I don't want my child mistreated by the other children, even though we don't believe. It's tough.

I'm a Muslim in TX & surviving-- they have gotten away with doing such things because nobody has protested it yet. Protest it (LOUDLY) and things will change -- I have seen it happen here before. Hang in there it only FEELS like everyone in TX is a Christian -- but that is NOT true.

EDIT: there is a difference in being allowed to pray (silently/privately) and it being done openly as a group. They also allow some bible classes but the bible is supposed to be looked at as litterature and NOT as the word of God. There is always private school...

I once attended Texas public school and I know it not like your friends described. I don't remember anything about passing fliers on church events.
I recommend you move to China because it is a Atheist country so you don't have to worry anything.

I live in Austin, and recently learned that Texas is one of 7 states (last I checked) with laws on the books that make it illegal for and Atheist to hold political office.

Welcome to Texas, sweetie!! You are in the Bible belt here and the State of Texas has just passed a law allowing prayer back into the schools and so forth. So, I would say to you...if you do not like it....best be thinking of another state to move too!

So, in answer to your profanity about our public schools....you should have made sure you knew our laws before moving to a State that will stand up for what MOST TEXAN's believe in and that is GOD! So get used to it or, go to realtor.com and look in another state whose laws more fit your Godless needs.

They prayed before the first PTA meeting at a school my daughter went to too (in Ohio), and the principal led the prayer. I had a fit.

Get your friend to have her son pass out atheist fliers about the use of logic and reasoning over blind faith.
