So, I am not overweight by any means. But I would like to stop smoking and start working out! I have had memberships at gyms before and never go. I have always just wanted someone to work out with. So I was thinking curves might be a good idea.. quick and easy and there are no guys looking at your ***. :) So is this strictly a place for weight loss or do they promote working out and being healthy?

I used to work at curves and in my opinion it works well for women who are overweight and need to lose fat. If you are already thin it might not prove to be effective in terms of toning or gaining strength because all of the machines work through resistance not actual weights. However, it is a really fun place, it gets everyone involved and we used to have fun little activities to spice up the routine once in awhile

I have not been to a Curves, but I read the book by the founder. it's circuit training. you do certain exercises for predetermined periods of time that add up to 30 minutes. you do an exercise on one machine for like 5 or 10 minutes, then walk in place (I think) for 3 minutes, then go to the next exercise for 5-10 minutes til you've gone the whole way around the circle. you're always done in 30 minutes. you can go and check them out for free. I borrowed the book from the library. the book also has exercises you can do at home if there isn't a Curves near where you live.

There is an easy way to loose weight and that is diet and exercises. Walk a good distance up and down hills increasing you heart rate, pulse, to between 120 and 250 beats per minute and you will find over time the weight will fall off. The heart foundation do not recommend jogging due to the damage it does to the vein valves in your legs. This is the safest way to loose weight without damaging your metabolic system. It worked for me and hundreds of other very overweight people I know.

One of my friends went there and hated it.. She said she just didn't feel like she got a good work out.. 30 minutes wasn't enough for her and she never lost weight.. I guess it varies, but when I work out I want to break a sweat!

It is a work out place - circuit training all set up to be run in half an hour. I'm sure if you went to one near you, they'd be happy to give you a tour and explain the philosophy.
