Which makes better pets??

I've owned three hamsters and three rats, and I definitely recommend the rats over the hamsters. Much, much, much friendlier, somewhat cleaner, and quite intelligent. Anyone who says rats are disgusting, mean, or ugly obviously hasn't ever held a pet rat. They're incredibly sweet <3.
They do, however, require more care and money--and I strongly recommend that you buy two instead of one (they're very social and happiest with buddies).
Re to the person who said hamsters are like mini-dogs: Hehe... That's the last thing that pops into my mind when I think of hamsters :). Rats are definitely more dog-like; they'll lick you, follow you around, and can learn tricks.

I personally think a rat would make a better pet, and I'm sure most people on here will soon tell you the same. Honestly hamsters are the last pet rodent I would buy. Although they get all the popularity, many lack friendliness, and make poor pets.

My pet rat lived longer than the hamster. And rats seem to more people rodents.

I would have to say a rat would make a better pet. Much more laid back and not big biters like hamsters.

rats are very nice pets but i
really think their tale is sick
but if you want a pet like a minnie dog
then I suggest a hamster
(just so u no rats dont bite less.you just have to get it to know you better)

i would say a hamster b/c a rat in my house juss terrifies me and having one as a pet is just as bad a hamster is a cute furry critter that is a great pet

Just so people can thumbs down me, but
mammals are meant to roam. It seems maybe
not keeping an animal in a little cage might be
nicer.

i say you should get a hamster there so cute and easy to take care of they pretty much take care of them selves so i say hamster.

hamster definitely. They dont bite as much as everyone thinks they do. you can teach them tricks and they are super cute! NO RATS! UGLY CRAWLIE THINGS
