I'm trying to lose some weight and get fit. But I still like to drink on the weekends with friends. All I have been drinking is light beer and I know that if I continue to keep drinking my beer, my beer belly will just get bigger. I work out during the week but on the weekends its a big beer fest. Would it be benificial to start driking hard liquor than beer? I am a fan of Vodka Cranberries and was wondering if that would be a good alternate to drinking beer.

Any and all information is greatly appreciated!!!

Unless your drinking 1 or 2 shots of straight vodka, and nothing else, you won't get lose much weight. Do you know that the "Cranberry "Juice"" that you think is better for you is soooooo much sugar. It's concentrate that is mixed with water when it comes out of the gun. If your serious about losing weight, you need to scale back on the drinking.

Find out how many calories are in one of the normal drinks you have. Then add up how much you've had in a weekend. 3500 calories = 1 lb. I bet you'll find that you are not making any progress, if gaining more.

Again, a light beer isn't bad, but when you have (lets say) 5+, you've just drank at least 500 calories.

Alcohol itself is the prinicpal form of empty calories... it's the alcohol that's doing you in! More bad news... if you absolutely CANNOT stop drinking, vodka crans are actually WORSE than light beer. They're just as high in calories, and all the sugar from the cranberry juice really packs on the weight. If you're looking for a lighter drink, stay away from mixed drinks all together, unless you go for the diet version (which is STILL high in calories, mind you, but it drops from 300+ to the 100s range). And beware bar food!! It's the devil!

However, i feel inclined to say... the very fact that you're trying to quit drinking (in order to lose weight) and find that you can't should throw a MAJOR red flag in your mind. To start to cut back, try switching out an alcoholic drink and a regular one (ie, jack and diet followed by just plain diet). If you tell the bartender/server in beginning of the night, your friends won't even know, and you'll end up drinking less! Quitting altogether is VERY difficult, but cutting back is definitely doable. GOOD LUCK!

Beer takes a bad rap. In itself, it's not very fattening. It's the pizza, hot sausages, cheeseburgers and french fries that you enjoy while having a couple of beers.
Back in 1968, I had to loose 45 lbs (in 5 weeks) to qualify for the physical requirements for a new job. I was working steady 4/12 shift in an office plus 3 hours overtime everyday and 8 hrs Saturday and Sunday.
Everyday my wife would fix me a nice, well balanced meal before I left for work and pack me a lunch. At 11:30 PM, before the overtime, I would go out with the guys and have 2 beers (500 calories), but no food.
I lost more than 50 lbs in those 5 weeks. People who didn't know that I was dieting thought I had cancer or sometime. My wife was so jealous that I was able to loose the weight.
Consider beer as a food and merely count the calories.

Vodka, better calorie wise until you add the cranberry juice (or any juice for that matter) which is super high claorie...clear liquor and diet (or straight shots) is the most lo-cal option but honestly, alcohol and weight loss don't go well together...moderation is key. Binge drinking on the weekends causes dehydration which in turn makes your body hold on to all kinds of nasty stuff but if ya gotta do it, be smart and at least don't drive while your drinking the hard stuff. SUCKS I know...

I'm pretty sure all alcohol is fattening. Not to mention when you're drinking, you're less likely to make good decisions about the rest of the calories you're consuming...like getting the munchies and mmm...pizza and beer...what a good combination. Mmmm...chicken wings and beer...what a good combination. Mmmm...the rest of this cake and beer...what a good combination. You get the point. Not good food choices for losing weight.

Probably best to lay off the drinking while you're losing weight and slowly add it back into your eating plan when you've neared your goal.

Or not.

Alcohol and weight loss. Hmmmmm! Two things that don't go together. You are probably better off with the hard stuff with fewer calories and all. But I really really like beer. Quandary.

I'm a woman and maybe my answer wouldn't be correct for men but here goes. From experience I have learned that if you drink alcohol of any kind, it will add fat to your body. The only way I know of (and believe me, this is from experience) is
to lay off alcohol altogether, otherwise you better workout 24/7
365 days a year!! Good luck. anslatadams@yahoo.com

You need to watch out for what you mix the hard alcohol with. Like cranberry juice is okay, but it has a lot of sugar, so you don't want to have too many. I have heard that the drink with the least calories is rum and diet soda. Or gin and tonic. Try those.
