Dove/pigeon - it's the same thing. In English, we just happen to have two words - one from the Dutch, one from the French. We tend to use the word pigeon for the larger members of the family and the word dove for the smaller ones.
The white pigeon - white dove has been a symbol of god in the middle east for thousands of years. http://www.azdoverelease.com/dove_history_page.html
It was brought into Christian tradition and became also a symbol of the Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit)

When Jesus was baptized by John, God used a dove descending upon Jesus as a physical sign that the Holy Spirit had entered into Him.

SORRY, I AM NOT A CATHOLIC, BUT HAVE BEEN
GIVEN THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION.
The Holy Spirit DECENDED like a dove decends, it
didn't look like a dove. It decended in bodily form &
it decended like a dove. How does a dove decend?
Gently.
Matt 3:16, "...the heavens were opened unto him, and
he saw the Spirit of God DESCENDING LIKE A DOVE,
and lighting upon him:"
Mark 1:10, "...he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit
LIKE A DOVE DESCENDING upon him".
John 1:32, "...I saw the Spirit DESCENDING FROM
HEAVEN LIKE A DOVE, and it bode upon him".
