I am a stay at home mom, and I agree the definition varies widely. My duties include, but are not limited to, caring for my children, run errands, house keeping, cook, accountant, maintenance, counselor, educator, tutor, entertainer, laundress, nurse. I cut every ones hair, take care of our pets, do the landscaping and lawn work. I am the mechanic, plumber, and master electrician. You name it, its my job to do it.
A lot of stay at home parents do less. My belief is my husband works long hours, then I do,too. There is always something in need of getting done.

In my mind, a housewife is someone who takes care of the home and all the chores associated with that. She grocery shops, cooks, cleans, laundry, etc. etc. If one is going to use that label, that is what it means to me. A house husband would do the same I suppose, and if you add the word Mom or Dad then that generally implies that they take care of the kids and organize their stuff too.
Many couples split these duties nowadays because many women have jobs outside the home, and the chores at home aren't so clear cut, so a couple has to do what works for them.
I work part-time, but I also consider myself a housewife/housemom. I do most of the house chores, although hubby does pitch in with cooking, groceries, and kids stuff occasionally. It seems the longer we are married, the more he pitches in.

Whom ever is the one to stay home and works in the home doing all the house duties has to do the, cleaning, cooking, take the kids where they need to be. When the one that works out side the home has to help out when they get home with the dishes and clean up and putting the kids to bed and so on and so on. But for sure all the house duties should be done before the out side worker comes home.

I think their primary responsibilities would be anything that involved the household and everything herein. The children, groceries, cleaning, laundry, cooking, bills, etc.
