So, I'm usually not insecure, but lately I have been getting a lot of mixed messages. Last year I was obsessed if I was overweight, or even a little bit chubby. This year things are starting to change, but recently a boy I like called me fat. When I told my other friends about this they shrugged uncomfortably but didn't disagree.
I'm 5"5-6 and I weight 120lb. I'm not at all muscly and I have more of a curvy build, and not necessarily a "heavy upstairs". I'm lacking all of the attributes that could account for if I was overweight, and whenever I ask my mother she responds with "You're thin, not skinny! Everybody has a little flab of stomach, it's natural. Just eat healthy, and excersise, etc." but she's said it so much I'm starting to think she's hiding something. I have a normal BMI, and but when I look in the mirror I become so upset I scratch my arms until they almost bleed.
Am I overweight, chubby, or even pudgy?
(I'm 14)

NO your weight is FINE!! The boy is just some immature 14 year old kid. All he knows about women/girls is what the media tells him, and what he sees on TV. The truth is REAL women are not 6'5" and 100 pounds, like the models in magazines, and on TV. REAL women are supposed to have some curves. Fourteen is a hard age for everyone. hormones are going crazy, and bodies are changing. It is also very common for both men and women to feel insecure about their body at that age. I PROMISE you are absolutely beautiful! I think your mom gave you great advise. Be sure to eat healthy, get plenty of exercise, and most importantly love yourself!
PS. Do you really think myself and the 30 some other people who posted answers would lie to you. I don't think so ;-)

Seriously...14 Is Way Too Young To Be Worried About Your Appearance. Let Me Guess The Boy Who Said You Where Fat Is Also 14, And Probably Has More Issues With Who He Is, Than You Can Probably Imagine. If You Are Worried About It...Have Your Parents Take You To Go See A Nutritionist. You Are Only 14 And Have A Lot Af Growing To Do!!! The Most Important Thing You Can Do Right Now Is Be Confident In Yourself And Stay Healthy. Work On Cardiovascular Training And Low Resistance Weight Training. They Will Help You Tremendously If You Are Concerned. You Can Also Try Cutting Anything "White" Out Of Your Diet!! No Breads, Pastas, Dairy Etc. In Other Words If It Doesnt Cluck Or Swim Dont Eat It If Its White. The Main Problem Is That Todays "Role Models" Are Food Deprived...Crack Head....Skanks....Really!!! And They Are A Joke!!! Unfortunately A Lot Of Kids Buy Into That Crap And Try To Emulate What They See. BE CONFIDENT, BE YOURSELF, EAT HEALTHY, AND ABOVE ALL DO YOUR RESEARCH AND SEE A PHYSICIAN! Find A Program That Is Right For You!!

Let me start off by telling you how sorry I am that you have such negative influences in your life.
NO, at your height and weight you are ABSOLUTELY NOT OVERWEIGHT or even close or even kind of chubby! You are completely thin at that height and weight.
Unfortunately, there are so many terrible messages in television, movies, magazines, music, and even among your friends on what is an ideal body shape and size. At your age, you need to learn to ignore these outside influences as much as you can and decide for yourself what is healthy and normal for you. Pressures are only going to get worse as time goes on, and as a teenage girl you are going to be at the center of this pressure. Do not let others make you feel bad about yourself or your body or anything about you!
As for your mom and your friends, it sounds like perhaps they buy into these body image messages because of their own insecurities, not because there is any problem or issue with you.
Be a strong and confident girl and you will grow into a strong and confident woman. It sounds like you're already on your way there, keep it up. Good luck!

5'6 and 120 does not sound fat to me at all! But there is a serious problem if you are scratching yourself. You sound alittle bit obsessive about this and that's not good. If you have a good BMI, etc. - then just be secure in that. If you get too obsessive about this, you can easily develop an eating disorder. Talk to your mom about the arm scratching.
The best thing you can do for yourself is to become happy with who you are. Yes, you definetely should always excercise - for the rest of your life - that's healthy. But to be so wrapped up in what others think of your body will have you on a roller coaster of emotions.

Simple answer is NO you are neither overweight, chubby or even pudgy. You seem to be approaching your weight in a health manner, however your body image is very unhealthy. Would you rather be a few punds overweight and have ugly looking arms? I would recommend that if you are having such a reaction to your self in the mirror that you seek out someone that you can speak to about the issue. I am glad that you have brought it to the web because your are admitting you are concerend. However you need someone to talk to in person.
Again I say as a person who is 5'6 and 150 lbs you are in no way overweight.

Are you kiddin'? You are WELL within the healthy range. Anyone saying you are fat or 'looking uncomfortable' when you ask if you're fat is completely retarded!!
I wonder if you're not just imagining that you're fat and thinking everyone else thinks so (except for the idiots) when they're really not?
I would say, celebrate your body, eat healthy, work out when you can and you will see people start to respond positively to you. It's all about how you carry yourself and you self-esteem (how you see yourself).
Take care and once again - You're Not Fat!! :) You Are Thin!

You are seriously not at all even a little bit fat!!!
All girls have a layer of fat under their skin, unless they're completely malnourished of course. You sound like you're a really healthy weight so keep at it. You may find yourself putting on a bit of weight in the next few years because you'll stop growing, but don't worry about, just make sure you don't overeat.
The people who say you're fat are wrong and have some serious body image issues. Ignore them. You might wanna see your school counsellor about the self-harm though.
Good luck xxx

No, sweetheart, not at all. I'm 5'6" and 125, and a size 3. That's not even chubby! The average size in America for a woman is 14.
I don't understand why people would lead you to beleive you're more than average. That's craziness!!
Don't let it bother you, they're wrong. Even moms can be wrong. My mom used to say I was fat, and she weighed a LOT more than I did. She was wrong.
You poor thing, don't scratch your arms till they almost bleed.

For the love of God... No. Honestly. Your weight is perfect. Ideal. Any less and you would be underweight.
I'm not lying. I have no reason, as I don't know you.
Please try not to care what other's think. Perhaps they are just jealous. Everyone carries their weight differently. Maybe exercise will make you feel better about yourself. 14 is a tough age. Hang in there. You look great, have confidence :)
