These used to be plentiful in Britain, but I'm finding it harder and harder to find a butcher shop that stocks it.

I have backed a few that ran like they were ready to be made into dog meat. I worked as a butcher back in the late 60's and there was a problem with getting fresh beef, We imported meat from Spain and the cheese cloth wraps that it came in was labelled horse meat. Not one customer complained about their meat.

Wow, some people are ignorant....
Anyways, I'm in Canada where practically nobody eats horsemeat (even though it's SOOO much healthier than beef and tastes practically the same!!) but I can buy it ground at any of the local grocery stores, or get fresh steaks and different cuts at a nearby market.
I'm surprised that you'd have any trouble finding it in Europe since eating different kinds of meat is much more accepted there.

Horse meat is not sold in the UK for human consumption. You can get it in France, but even there it's not so common any more because a horse butcher can only sell horse meat and nothing else. I've had it a couple of times and it tastes ok but not surprisingly, it made me a little bit queazy afterwards.

I think that you'll have a struggle in the U.K. Nothing wrong with horse meat actually, providing that it's cooked correctly, I must say though , I prefer a good beef steak myself !

It is not illegal..most of the meat is from new forest ponies etc , and they are exported to France...I think it is a little on the sweet side but stews nicely.........haven't had it for years

Trying to start something controversial, are we?
You know the Brits don't like eating anything they give names to, such as Dobbin.
