Both are GREAT handguns. The 1911 is traditionally available in more calibers (.380, .9mm, .38 Super) and the P-35 (Browning Hi-Power) in .9mm (and now .40 S & W).
John Browning himself improved on his 1911 design when he invented the Hi-Power. So the Hi-Power is a more 'modern' design which holds more ammo (albeit in smaller calibers) and does away with the dubious grip safety of the 1911.
So which is better? It is all a matter of personal choice. Some say the 1911 fits their hand better and other say the Hi-Power fits their hand better. I like both but prefer the 1911 in .38 Super.
Best.

RE:
What is better the Browning Hi Power or Colt 1911?
I always liked 1911s and I know a lot of people who have them. But I have read articles before that said the Browning Hi power is one of the best designed handguns in the world.I just wanted to see what you guys had to say about it.

the draw backs to the browning hi power are, 9mm vs .45 acp in the colt 1911, the high power has no beavertail grip safety so guys like me with big hands get "hammerbite" from them. On the plus side, the browning is one of the most accurate 9mm's I have ever fired and it carrys a lot more ammo in the magazine than the 1911.
The 1911 fires a much more powerful bullet at 230 grains vs the 115 grain standard bullet for the 9mm. Also, the 1911 fires the bullet at 850 ft per second which is much slower than the 9mm. The .45 round traveling slower means you get a much better transfer of energy to the target vs the 9mm faster and smaller bullet which punches right on thru leaving a smaller hole and less energy transfer to the target.
Both pistols are very, very well made, I have used both, and would use either one in an emergency, IF I got to pick the ammo in the 9mm hi power.

Out of the 2 you listed, I like the 1911 better. They seem to fit my hands a little better than a High-Power. Although they are both great pistol and a very reliable. Also alot of folks like the number of aftermarket parts available for the 1911

Take your pick, and you can find eleventy-three thousand people to support your choice.
It all comes down to which pistol feels best in your hand, and whether you prefer a 9 mmP or a .45 ACP.
Over the last fifty years or so, the articles spurred by this very question have used enough newsprint to deforest a rain forest.
My preference is the M-1911 and the .45 ACP. The Hi-Power just doesn't fit my hand as well as a Government Model, and I prefer the .45 ACP over the 9 mmP.

John Browning designed both with the HiPower being his last pistol design. It stands to reason if there were any flaws with his 1911 design Browning would have corrected them when he designed the P-35 (HiPower). With that being said I am a big 1911 (and 45 ACP) fan but I also feel there is no more attractive pistol made than the HiPower. I have owned both and when fed decent ammunition both pistols work flawlessly.

They are both good. To my knowledge the Hi Power comes in 9mm or .40 S&W, whereas the 1911 is primarily .45 ACP with a few companies making them in 9mm (and probably .40 S&W too). So in my opinion, if you want to fire .45 ACP go with the 1911, but if you prefer 9mm or .40 S&W then go with the Hi Power.

The Browning Hi Power is without a doubt my favorite handgun of all time. I've had two of them, only because the first was stolen from my truck in Dallas. The replacement I've had since 96. Great field weapons, can haul them through the mud and muck, take all kinds of abuse. I have never been able to shoot the .45 nearly as well, and I prefer more rounds over more stopping power.
