NO! Windows 2000 & Xp are based on NT = New technology which microsoft created as a new operating system that is not DOS dependant. DOS has not been required since 98 (or milenium)

The answer is NO.
Windows until 98 version used DOS in some form or the other.
And the more well known Windows such as Windows95 and Windows98 were based off DOS, the server version of Windows called WindowsNT was not.
Windows2000/XP are evolved from the NT side and hence dont have/use DOS.
The command prompt you see is just a tool inside Windows and not actual DOS.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com
It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

While there is a disc operating system as part of windows XP, it is not DOS. I am not sure about Windows 2000, but I think it is the same.

If you use 1) *all* NTFS partitions, 2) *none* of your applications are DOS or Windows 98 based, and 3) you *never* need to run the command prompt, then no, it doesn't really need it.
However, be aware that if it breaks and you all of your partitions are NTFS, you will not be able to get to any of your data.

No, DOS is virtually dead as an operating system.
XP / 2000 have their own version of "DOS" built-in to the operating system.

Yes. They could have made windows Dos-free but for some odd reason they haven't. Which is one of many reasons windows sucks.
