Curious - someone hits me and takes off. The cops come. I don't even get an accident report. When I call the next day to get some info, they say that it won't even be assigned to an officer for a week! A lot can happen in a week - like the guy that hit me could have his car fixed and deny everything! Why are cops like this?? Why are they not interested in helping?

Unfortunately, your situation falls very low in the priority of law enforcement. Since there were no injuries and only property damage that is probably covered by insurance, the police are not going to be able to give you any immediate response.
I am not saying that I agree with this. I know that this case is the most important case in your life. But to the police, it is just another hit and run with low probability of resolution. If you have information like a tag number or some other means of identifying the car, most states have provisions for pro se litigation to recover damages in an automobile accident. That may be your only option and again it is a long shot as identifying the car and driver may not be easy.

It's not that police do not care. The process goes like this. Once you get in an accident, apolice unit is assigned to your accident. The police office may have investigate several traffic accident that day so he is ultimatley responsible for several other incidents. Once he/she finishes the accident rpt, it is forwarded to a supervisor to check for any errors. Without errors it is forwarded to seversal dffferent areas of the department including a Hit and Run department that conduct supplemental reports
During the supplemental investigation they make an attempt to locate the individual who was in the car via aditional info.
It is okay if they get their can fix because it makes the evidence in court stronger when they get the repair shop records subpeaned to prove that the individual who owns the car had knowledge of the incident.
Just is slow but it works sometimes.
On the other hand police department are notorious for not returning calls to possible victims.

I honestly I don t know. My family were in a hit and run. It was the middle a busy intersection and the girl that hit us left her car and ran to a motel down the street. We were lucky enough to have people follow her to where she was and called the cops and told where she was at. Its turned out she bought the car the day before from an elderly lady. And the girl didn t have insurance or transfer any of the info into her name. So, our insurance said it was the woman that sold her the car that on the hook for everything.Even though the girl that hit us was going to jail, cause she on drugs when hit us. My mom was so upset. We still don t understand how someone who sells a car can be held responsible for someone else s crime.

Every case is different. You provided VERY little information to go on about the accident here. If you don't have much information about the other vehicle, the chances of catching the other person are about zero. if you have information such as license plate number, a good description of the driver, car make/model/color/damage they would most likely respond quicker.

It's the whole "run" part that makes investigating hit and run accidents difficult and often fruitless. You have the license plate number, but do you have a description of the driver? You can't prosecute a car...

They are derelict in their duty. Report it to some high ranking official in the police dept. If you get no results, you can go to the state attorney general's office and report the police department for dereliction of duty for not looking into your allegations and shrugging it off.

cause cops SUCK like that, someone hit me in a parking garage, dented my bumper a little and scraped paint off a quarter panel resulting in rust over time. the cop told me they might not even be able to file a report because there was less than 1K$ damage done, i said "are you or have you ever been a mechanic? how bout an insurance adjuster?" i was SO pissed, now i take the law into my own hands...j/k but i do keep an eye out for the maroon vehicle that left its paint on my bumper. best of luck.
