The last few Years I have been thinking about joining up, but now I have made up my mind. Currently 20 years old (i'll join after I turn 21) and single. Navy caught my attention, I think I will love the life at sea in the Navy (grew up near San Francisco) . As I said I will definitely either go in as a MA or Cook in the Navy, I currently am planning on becoming a Police Officer after I serve my time, hell if I love it I make even make a career out of it.

Im tring to find some unbiased opinions on each of these jobs. I will NOT go into the Army or Marines so please avoid those comments, I have no interest in being infantry, and im not much into technical jobs (mechanics, etc). I do plan on talking to a recruiter next year but want some non recruit opinions, but want to know if you enjoyed your time in Navy. Will I have the opportunity to go out on deck and night and relax watching the sea? What about going in as a Cook? Will I have room to grow in the Navy starting as an E1?

CS is being phased out.. all shore billets are being contracted out to civilians, so one, all you would see is sea duty and two, your promotion prospects will suck raw eggs. You are the first one awake and the last one to bed.

as for MA, that too is overmanned, and you WILL see combat in the sandbox. promotion prospects suck also at the moment, although that may settle down in a couple of years.

but all this is a moot point, first you have to take the ASVAB to see what ratings you qualify for, and then you have to see if they even have any slots available.

Man go MA for sure!! MS sucks ***!! I was an IT when I was in and man I was sure glad I didnt go cook after gettin to my ship!! MA was a great 6 month tour. O and there is two different types of MA that you can go. One is for corrections and one is for regular MA, U will be a regular MA when you join but after about a year or so at a command you can request to go to the corrections school. No matter what branch you join, if u go Police in ANY branch, you will go through the same school at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. O and being in the Army or Marines doesnt automatically make you an Infantryman! Army and Marines do have Police Forces also! Advancement for Navy MA and Marine Security Forces are slow but its better then being a cook!!

WEll, i'm non-biased, cuz i don't really care. I have a friend who went in as a Cook. He LOVES it, school was easy, some math though. good pay, crappy jobs the first year, but that'll always happen. as an e-1 you can only go up. 6-9 mths to e-2, then e-3. just show that you are a leader.

Wanting to join the military is great, but you have to remember, when joining the military you don't make the decision if you will be a cook or a master-at-arms or fire fighter or computer geek. It will depend on you ASVAB scores. You could "want" to be a cook, but end up as well.....a cook...they are pretty much bottom of the military food chain when it comes to jobs. Better have a few discussions the the recruiter. You want to be able to get a job when you finish the military.

I'd take MA between those two choices.

I had a lot of chances to watch the sea. But there's not much to watch when you are steaming.

You can go as far as you are willing to work for.

Choose MA. Would you rather be scrubbing pans on a ship or standing gate guard duty at a Naval Unit? If you go MA you could also be a shore patrol unit.
