I posted this for a friend who is running out of options in hopes that somebody might know of something he hasn't tried. This batch of answers offers a very wide range in treatement ideas, and I don't know what to pick as best answer, and have decided to leave it for a vote. I would like to thank everyone for thier participation and points of view, and have emailed your answers to him, in the hope he might find something he hasn't tried yet. Also thanks for the good wishes. There are a couple days left on this question, so I will also leave it here in hopes that someone else may come up with something. For those of you who are dealing with this awful condition, I wish you good healing, and hope the treatments you are using will continue to work well for you....

If you want to go with the natural products, ( perfect choice).First you need a natural anti inflammatory, Bromelaine, (pineapple pill).Omega 3 , and Glucosamine and Condroityne, You have to take all of them at once.
My father had this problem, and I gave him those supplements, and he never complain again.

Imagine for a moment your arthritis completely vanishing right now.
If, in a moment, your pain and stiffness melted away. And your joints all of a sudden functioned like a well-oiled machine.
Like a magic wand was waived, you'd be able to jump up from your chair and run around the room like a kid.
And imagine that you'd never have to suffer as much as a pinch of arthritis stiffness or pain ever again.
I know this sounds impossible right now, but bear with me, because sometimes miracles happen.
It was a gift from a woman on the other side of the world. From the kindness of her heart, she took pity on my suffering and taught me how to completely reverse my arthritis.
Today, I want to do the same for you!

I was just diagnosed with RA last week after 3 months of unbearable pain. The doctor has placed me on prednisone and sulfasalazine, (its an older drug but i chose to start with one that has the least side effects) I cant say i feel better already because its suppose to take several weeks for that and if it does not then more medications can be added like Mexotrate.
The good news is that there are a lot of different options for medications and people do much better prognosis wise being on something sort of medication. The goal is to prevent the damage. The bad news is that its trial and error to see which one works best.
I asked my doctor about glucosomine and he said to save my money and play the lotto because winning will help me feel better than taking those pills. He said that glucosomine is not meant for RA but for osteoarthritis.
Good luck and feel better!

My husband was diagnosed in 1994 and has been very successful with the chemotherapy methotrexate. He has been on methotrexate for about 7 years. Vicodin doesn't seem to help when he has flareups, but naprosyn works great.

If you are taking drugs pl avoid.
Pain killer meds never kill the pain; we loose the sense of pain and don't feel the pain for some time. During this period many times our body treats the pain and credit goes to meds; otherwise disease becomes chronic.
There is no medicine for RA; Not only RA, but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, WORRY, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drugs, TV, computer, addiction,
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 90% success in treating ALL PAINS confirms it.
Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I treat RA with SHREE SWASTHYAYOG THERAPY, but how can you manage pl see.

Over the counter glucosamine is good for arthritis. It actually reduces inflammation in between the joints. Also, try taking an ibuprofen. That, too, reduces inflammation.
