I'm doing a speech about this stuff and I'm going to open it with all the crazy (whether they're true or not) stories of all the things you can "get cancer from" - What's the craziest thing you've heard that you can get cancer from? Or have you heard crazy ones that actually are true? Thanks>

Just to comment really quick though: I'm not by any means poking fun at any type of cancer or anything like that. I'm just simply trying to give my audience in my speech class the truth from the myths about things that you MIGHT be able to get cancer from.

Since we are inundated with stories about what causes cancer, some people say that everything causes cancer so there's no reason to be careful about what you ingest or anything (I hear a lot of smokers say this).
The oddest myth that actually has a lot of believers is that if you expose cancer to air (such as during surgery) it will spread or get worse.
I live in the South and I hear this from the older generation all the time. Also, there is a large contingent of fundamentalist Christians here who believe that you can be cured of cancer if you just have enough faith in God.

Oh! And I heard a doctor tell a patient that she had gotten fibrocystic disease in her breasts (benign cysts that fill the breasts) because she was "too rough with them." Whatever that's supposed to mean. Actually, it's now called "fibrocystic changes" and it's quite common for women that were this patient's age!!!

There is a rumor that you can get cancer from using anti-perspirant underarm protection (as opposed to simply deoderant). The idea is that the anti-perspirant stops the underarm glands from sweating, thus blocking back the glands and leaving one's self open to acquiring cysts. It seems that there is some truth as well. Follow up studies proved that if the glands were not allowed to sweat over a long period of time cysts could form. Yet these cysts were almost entirely always benign and when they weren't it was merely by coincidence.

One thing you can't get cancer from is: CANNABIS. Studies have conclusively demonstrated that not only can you not get cancer in general from smoking cannabis; you can't even get lung cancer from smoking cannabis. In point of fact, cannabis smokers have much lower rates of lung cancer than both tobacco smokers AND NONSMOKERS.
However, some people are reluctant to smoke cannabis, despite all its anti-carcinogenic properties. This is no longer a problem because one may enjoy cannabis by vaporizing it. This activates the healing compounds of cannabis without exposing the consumer to the risk of tars or other stuff associated with smoke.

heating food on styrofoam plates in the microwave. Not sure if it is true or not, but I have heard that you can get Cancer from it.
One email I just go a few weeks ago was drinking water from a plastic bottle that has been in your car and gotten hot.

The craziest thing that I have heard of that gives you cancer is chewing gum. Not the kind that we chew today. They (whoever they are) used to put uranium in gum to get rid of tooth aches. They quickly realized that the gum was making people sick and stopped production.

I must admit my favorite was when I developed cancer in my left breast, telling my ex-husband (we are still friends but he needs a reality check occasionally) that most women get breast cancer in their left breast because most men are right handed! Said with a straight face, he went very pale! LOL.

I heard you can get ovarian cancer from drinking and eating soy products. Because soy is a mimic of oestrogen and plays around with hormones.

Hell, the sun gives you cancer. I just recently found out you can be born with cancer. That sucks!

Cell phones. They can't give you cancer, but some schools have banned them from the school because they are way too pver protective. Stupid schools.
