in my early 20s i used to lift 3 to 4 times a week and built up a lot of mass. in my 30s now, i dont have the time to get to the gym more than once a week. is lifting all the muscle groups in an hour of lifting, 3 to 4 sets of each better than not lifting at all if it is all i have time for?
i have managed to maintain some mass by doing this.
i do have time to do a half hour of running 4 or 5 times a week around where i live so i do this on top of the hour of lifting.

Well, of course it is better than nothing. Anything is better than nothing. You will just have to be diligent about what you do at the gym when you ARE there. If you train smartly, then you can achieve many things in that one hour. Do some research on abbreviated training. Many people have gotten by on just one day a week (there was a time I had to do this -- I actually got stronger, though I did lose some definition). Good luck.

Yes! Lifting once versus none is better, but how about switching out one of your 4 or 5 running sessions for a 30 min lifting session? That way you could at least do 2 lifting and maybe 3 or 4 cardio? It may be a better balance. And if youre worried about keeping up that muscle mass you may just increase your protein intake a bit. Hope this helps!

Yes. In fact, many people who lift only work out each muscle group once per week.

Lifting for 1 hour, once a week during which you do various muscle groups, is not going to build a lot of bulk but it will certainly keep your muscles fit and strong and maintain muscle tone.

When you have time to I reccomend that you strength train since, msot often, people tend to do more cardio. Strength training is important for building and maintaining healthy bones and it also helps the metabolism which is needed when you're growing older, because as you age your metabolism tends to slow down. So use some of the running time to strength train and lift weights because if you build up muscle mass your metabolism becomes faster and you can burn more calories in a shorter amount of time.

the lifting once a week combined with the running will help you keep and tone the mass that you already have. you will not gain any new mass, but you also wont loose what you already have.

Is eating one meal a day better than none at all? Of course it is. Walking one block is better than nothing. So is lifting the
weights for an hour better than not at all. You should know this
if you are into this sort of thing. Of course it is!!
