When I sing along with songs, I can hit the right notes, but when I try to sing the song without the song playing, I hit all the wrong notes. Can this be fixed? And please don't just say singing lessons, because I don't know if I can afford those! I need some tips on what to do just by myself. Thanks!

I can play a scale on my guitar and sing along to that, will that work if I don't have a piano to sing along to?

Probably what's happening is that you have trouble hearing the intervals between notes without an accompaniment. It is a really common problem for a lot of people. Singing a capella is not as easy as a person would think.

If you have access to a piano, or an electronic keyboard (which you can buy pretty cheap at a discount store), try playing through some basic scales and singing along, both up and down the scale. Then play notes that skip around on the keyboard, and try singing those. Sing with the piano once. Sing by yourself once. Then sing with the piano again to see how close you are. String more notes together as you get better.

After a while you'll get more used to listening to the skips (or intervals) in the notes, and you'll know what those skips feel like when you're singing them. Then, when you listen to songs on the radio, you'll be able to match the intervals more closely.

To put it into practice, I would sing with your songs on the radio, each time turning the sound down a little farther, so you can't hear the music as well. Eventually, you should be able to turn the sound all the way off, and sing your heart out.

Good luck!

Listen, you don't need to learn how to sing. Maybe you don't know the song. Listen to the song once or twince and then try to sing along with it. Your mind may have the tune stuck in your head so you'll be able to sing it without the music and then when you go to sing with the music then you will be even better

You're not alone. Professional singers when singing forrecording studios will wear a head phone with the melody playing along with them, so that they can keep their pitch.

The best of the best sing with out accompanyment. You're not bad for having music, just about average....

I always sing better when I hear that someone's singing with me whether it be a radio, a chorus, or a friend I think its because if I just hear me alone singing I get too shy and I come all out speaky and stuff lol. And maybe you sing better because you can hear what its suppose to sound like.

you don't really need singing lessons..next time you hear a song pay attention to the note and repeat the song a couple time all you have to do is learn the notes and repeating them helps.
