Why do they get to have all the fun? Spread your optomism as thick as they spread their pessimism. For every negitive thing they say counter it with a positive one.
Pess- It's a crappy day.
YOU- Yeah but anit it great to be alive?
Pess- That wont work, it's a bad idea.
You- Let me find out myself, I think its a great idea.
Pess- Why are you smiling?
You- Why are you frowning?
Pess- Well dont you think your just brilliant?
You- Yeah, thanks for noticing?
Got it? Get busy, you got some positive to spread and dont take prisioners.

The simplest answer is to get as far away from this person as possible and stay away for along as possible.
Don't waste your time or effort thinking that your going to change that person it is a drain on you and a complete waste of time. Sometimes the best thing you can do is leave them alone. Find other optimists and move on.
I have had to let several people, who I thought were my friends, go. If I didn't they would have undoubtedly held me back. It's not fun but necessary
One drop of black paint can turn a whole can of white paint gray.

One of the most important things to come to terms with in life is that no-one can change another person. They can only change themselves. If this person's pessimism bothers you, walk away or find new friends. If they are a family member tell them how you feel. Surround yourself with people who keep you up, not bring you down. This person can only affect you negatively if you allow them to. You might suggest that they see a therapist as it sounds like they might have anger issues. Point is, that doesnt have to affect you unless you enable it to.

I think usually their past experiences have caused this attitude. Even worse is the "eternal optimist" who hasn't had any really bad experiences in life and always thinks everything is...or will be "hunky dorey". Esp. if someone is grieving...this borderlines emotional cruelty. There's "a time for everything"." A time to laugh..a time to cry..".etc. The answer is to respond appropriately according to the situation. Some people "learn"from their past experiences to" expect the worse and you're never disappointed". Amen.

Realize that pessimists are right half the time, and optimists the other half. There is a place for everyone in this world.

I live with the world's worst pessimist. I just ignore him when he's on one of his rants. He hates to be ignored. >:)

My grandpa is like that. Once, my mom told him to get medication. There is a high chance he has depression and bipolar.
