A good obedience school or trainer is a must !! How old is your dobe ? It took a while to train my dobe. They are smart, but big powerful dogs. You can try a spray bottle w/ water in it and then spray him in the face when he jumps. You need to be consistent and patient. They are like little children that Don't know the proper way to behave, they need to be taught. Also make sure he gets plenty of exercise. At least 30 minutes a day.

To get it to stop jumping on you, turn your back to it.

Get the book "the other end of the leash".

There are two training methods - positive reinforcement or negative reinforcement.

With dogs positive reinforcement works very well. Positive reinforcement is giving the dog something it wants when it does what you want. The dog wants food. You want the dog to get down. Teach the dog that the word down means hit the floor with your stomach and I will give you a treat. Every time you say "down" that dog will hit floor faster than you can say the next word, providing that 80% of the time you give it a treat.

Negative reinforcement is hitting the dog, or jerking a choke collar when it does something you don't like. Dogs aren't very good at making the negative connection. It's largely a waste of energy and screws up the dog.

Search the web for a training method called "clicker training", it uses positive reinforcement. It is amazing how well it works. Once the dog gets the basic concept down you can teach it do almost anything in a matter of minutes. The key is to keep reinforcing what it's learned over and over and over and over again.

You shouldn't hit him. It defeats your purpose.

He's looking for attention when he jumps up. Say NO, and walk away. Give him zero attention until he behaves. When he does, even for one second, praise him calmly. Everyone in the family must participate in this program or he'll be confused and it won't work.

You may have to scruff him to get his attention, which is what his mother would have done. Take hold of his neck fur and gently, firmly pull him back on his hind feed. He'll be off balance and uncomfortable but unhurt. Look him in the eyes, tell him firmly NO and walk away. Don't resort to this as a habit, maybe just the first time or two, then later if he is that stubborn.

Be more stubborn than he is. Stick with it.

Develope a praise word like "Good!" and always repeat it when he does what is asked of him. Don't make it complicated. He needs a word, not paragraph. Good luck!

Never hit a dog!!!Dogs are pleasers they just need to know what makes you happy. If you dog is jumping up at you when you wanlk in the door simply rase your knee so he hits it with his chest, this is not a goon feeling for the dog, tell him no when you do it as well you need to give him a comand such as down and point to the floor. The key for any training with a dog is constancy and comphandance.Say what you mean and mean what you say. Also makeing sure your dog is well excresised will help keep your dog from missbehaveing.Have you ever noticed how a you dont have energy to get into truble if you taird you just want to kick back and relax. So see if you can arrange to walk your dog 2 a day.

If you have trouble with a dog jumping at you then you need to ignore it because they do it for attention. Assuming your dog is not so big that it will knock you over, then when it starts to jump at you, turn your back to the dog and ignore it completely (don't even say anything), until the dog calms down and stops jumping at you. Then the dog will learn that jumping doesn't get it any attention. As for jumping at your sister, the dog should probably not be allowed to play with her until it learns better manners!

You can use your knee, when the dog jumps up bend you knee towards the dog and say down, don't yell it just say it firm. Use a leash to help keep him down. Put the leash on the down and put it under your foot so the dog can't jump up, and tell them good dog with a treat or something. They have harnesses to train the dog not to jump up on you.
If you can, go to an obedience class and get professional help. There is always one somewhere around everyone.

Don't ever hit your dog...
Don't ever scream at your dog...
A strong voice is very effective PLUS teaching the word "no" or "bad".... keep ALL commands to one word only.

When your dobie jumps up... raise your knee up and turn sideways... first they bump into the knee - not pleasant - then you avoid him by turning away - oops he says... "My Master does not like that"- they will stop after a few times...

Good Luck kiddo

Start by letting him know your in charge. A simple way to do this is to make him sit and wait while you walk through the doorway first. The reason he is jumping is that he is trying to be the dominant being. You have to establish the chain of command, not by hitting him, but by showing him who is in charge. There are several books available to you at the library on this.

thats not being a "bad dog" that's just being an untrained dog
NO ANIMAL DESERVES TO BE HIT - EVER!!
if your problem is that your dog jumps on you then there many ways of correcting this problem, are is a link to two short informative on line videos which discuss ways of training your dog to not jump on people:
http://petvideo.com/index.cgi?category=22
I prefer to use the technique of turning your back and leaving the room, do this repeatedly until the dog stops jumping on you. It takes patience and practice.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A "BAD DOG" ONLY UNEDUCATED OWNERS WHO DO NOT PROPERLY TRAIN THEIR DOGS
you may want to consider taking your dog to obedience courses at your local petco or petsmart; they will be better able to train you and your dog
here is a link to obedience classes you might want to check out in your area:

good luck
(btw: I know that typing in caps lock makes it seem like I'm screaming at you: I'm not, I just want you to pay extra attention to those sentences. Please don't hit your dog, that can only lead to more behavioral problems and aggression. Try reading the book "Positive Dog Training for Idiots", you could probably find it at your local library and I know it was helpful for me when I read it.)

My lab used to do that...and she knocked a few people over...dogs just get really excited when they see people...especially new people. There are several ways you can break them of that. The way we did it...was everytime we came in the door...we automatically turned out backs on the dog....and everytime they tried to jump....we turned our backs. Also...before we would pet them....we would make them sit...but you have to be very consistent....Eventually our dogs got the idea. Also...some people choose to knee them in the chest everytime they jump...it doesn't really hurt them...it scares them more than anything....they learn pretty quick on that too. Also...everytime they jump...you can use both hands to push them down by their chest...and say SIT in a very firm way...and keep doing that until they sit..and then pet them. You can also take them to an obedience school...that helps a lot of owners. Good luck
