I discovered a while ago that to make cheesy love songs more endurable when they were overplayed was to make them between my parents' dog and her beloved squeaky toy.
But I still cry when I hear Del Shannon's "Runaway," because the dog I had for 10 years (from when I was 6 to when I was 16) is my little runaway.
Here's some of the lyrics - I guess I'm just missing her a little bit today:
"And as I still walk on I think of the things we've done together
While our hearts were young.
I'm walking in the rain
Tears are falling and I feel the pain
Wishing you were here by me to end this misery
And I wonder why she ran away
And I wonder where she will stay - my little runaway."
Feel free to share.

Aww, my dog has "Bambi" moments where she chases butterflies and I tell her to stop before I puke from her cuteness.
Cleoppa & Sarah - I do the same thing with changing the words so they're about my dogs
Diane S -
That's so sweet!

Don't worry, I also sing to my dogs. I do a stirring rendition of "Mississippi Foo Foo" to the tune of "Little Bunny Foo Foo," complete with motions and the dog looking at me like I'm insane. My parents' dog has her own "voice" that I sing to her in, which is kind of indescribable, but she gets songs like Lifehouse's "Hanging By a Moment" sung for her about playing with her favorite squeaky toy. She will seriously stand there staring at you until you throw it ("standing here until you make me move"). This dog is spoiled; she has several songs about her - plus the "Crest voice." That's a fun one.

Honey by Bobby Goldsbro.
My Missy was a honey blond mutt. She has been at the Rainbow Bridge just over 4 years now. Honey was one of her nicknames.
Part of that song goes.
And Honey I miss you and I'm being good and I'd love to be with you if only I could.
You're a very sad person whever gave the thumbs down. I loved that dog. You will never know true love because you are so mean!

"That's what friends are for" Dionne Warrick
Lyrics
And I never thought I'd feel this way
And as far as I'm concerned
I'm glad I got the chance to say That I do believe I love you
And if I should ever go away
Well then close your eyes and try
To feel the way we do today and then if you can remember
Keep smilin' keep shinin'
Knowing you can always count on me for sure
That's what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for
I cry every time I hear it and it is 10 years on 20th October since my best friend died. 3 dogs later and I still miss him. You only have one dog that takes your heart completely. A bit of me died with him.

I went to see a local production of "Bye Bye Birdie" shortly after I got my puppy. So, one of his songs is a modified version of "We Love You Conrad."
We love you Cody
Oh yes we do
We love you Cody
And will be true
When you're not near us
We're blue
Oh, Cody, we love you
We love you Cody!
We love you Cody!
Also, since he was still a baby close to Christmastime, "Cody Baby" (to the tune of "Santa Baby") is another of his songs.
I had a CD made by Disney with all kinds of dog songs. Pretty fun, actually. These songs always seemed to describe my Brittany well:
Bird Dog - The Everly Brothers
Everything Reminds Me Of My Dog - Jane Siberry
Me And My Arrow - Harry Nilsson

My dog is Jackie, but every time Rod Stewart's Maggie plays, I sing 'Jackie I couldn't have cried, any mo-or-or'
Or Jackson Brown's Doctor My Eyes... Jackie my eyes have seen the years, and the slow parade of tears...

Heart - Dog and Butterfly is the song I play every summer when the butterflies are out in the garden. I had a whippet named Minnie Pearl. She was a butterfly chaser extrordinarre! (she never caught one, but she tried !) here's the lyrics]
There I was with the old man
Stranded again so off I'd ran
A young world crashing around me
No possibilities of getting what I need
He looked at me and smiled
Said "No, no, no, no, no child.
See the dog and butterfly. Up in the
Air he like to fly." Dog and butterfly
Below she had to try. She roll back down
To the warm soft ground laughing
She don't know why, she don't know why
Dog and butterfly
Well I stumbled upon your secret place
Safe in the trees you had tears on your face
Wrestling with your desires frozen strangers
Stealing your fires. The message hit my mind
Only words that I could find
See the dog and butterfly
Up in the air he like to fly
Dog and butterfly below she had to try
She roll back down to the warm soft ground
Laughing to the sky, up to the sky
Dog and butterfly
We're getting older the world's getting colder
For the life of me I don't know the reason why
Maybe it's livin' making us give in
Hearts rolling in taken back on the tide
We're balanced together ocean upon the sky
Another night in this strange town
Moonlight holding me light as down
Voice of confusion inside of me
Just begging to go back where I'm free
Feels like I'm through
Then the old man's words are true
See the dog and butterfly
Up in the air he like to fly
Dog and butterfly, below she had to try
She roll back down to the warm soft
Ground with a little tear in her eye
She had to try, she had to try
Dog and butterfly
yeah
Up in the air, he liked to fly
The dog and butterfly, below she had to try
She rolled back down to the warm soft ground
Laughing she don’t know why
But she had to try she had to try
Dog and butterfly

Sorry, i'm a dork. I make up songs and sing them to my dogs.
I'm NOT singing to you guys. Only my dogs get the benefit of the lyrics that go something like
I love my Tankman
He is my black man
He is my big man
He is my man man man...
And yes it goes on for each and every one of them... All 5.
Oh God I'm embarrassed.
Actually, it does get worse but I have my pride, sorta.

I don't remember the title of the song, but its by Jewel.
She sounds like she is saying Oreo, which was the name of my black and white cat. Me and mom would play it all the time when he was in a playful mood.
