It's called "self defence" Sounds pretty healthy actually. If you have a situation that is making you feel that way, you either"
1) Find a solution to rectify the problem
2) Allow the situation to totally floor you, depression sadness etc.
3) Or you realize that there is nothing you can do to fix the problem, walk away and put it aside.
Sounds like you are at number three. Go forward. Good luck.

When I went through a depression a year ago, yes I started to get apathetic. That's the worst when you begin not caring anymore about yourself or the people and world around you, when you go through your days with no joy or enthusiasm, when it is hell to even exist and waking up each day is painful to the mind. It was tough-going. Therapy is what helped me.
Underneath that not caring is a lot of caring, it's just been wiped out because of the depression. I hope you will think about doing some therapy. You need to talk about this with someone, or if you are taking medications then think about asking you doctor to try something else.

I'm sorry you feel like that. I'm in a long-distance relationship myself, and although my other half isn't that far away I only see him about once a month or so, sometimes less. There isn't really a good way to cheer up I'm afraid. Having the physical closeness is nice, but you could always plan something so huge when you do see him that you would be so excited that you don't have a chance to be sad. How often do you talk to him? Try talking to him more often, or make proper time for each other once a week or so when you can talk everything through from your respective weeks. Chin up, it'll all be worth it! x

After feeling very gloomy for an extended period of time, what happens (typically) is the person stops feeling everything: happy, sad, etc. He or she just feels nothing (or apathy).
Are you looking for a solution to this problem? If you are, my advice would be to see a psychiatrist and get some anti-depressants.

Speaking for myself, I had been sad and depressed for a long time and I just couldn't shake it. Then it just seemed as if I was sad all the time. I did get help and I'm now on a mild anti-depressant and it's turned my life around. I can now enjoy all the wonderful moods that people go through all the time. Please get help, you don't need to suffer, life is for living and enjoying.

I think you can become numb to the feelings, but it is not a good thing. Clinical studies have demonstrated that the longer depression goes untreated, the more likely it is to become treatment resistent.
So, if you are asking for yourself, please get help soon. it is very important in your recovery process.
Good luck and God bless.
