My neighbor charges me 5 dollars a day-to watch her for 30-45 minutes to watch my daughter and take her to school(which is two minutes away-they can't walk because no sidewalk on main road)
Several people said that was too much
What do you guys think?

Her daughter goes to the same school
She is not scheduling her day around it!

If this is an everyday occurrence, then around $5 is appropriate, I guess. Most babysitters charge more than that per hour. If she's doing it 5 days a week for only that short amount of time, I wonder if she'd consider doing a weekly $20 rate instead of a daily rate. That way you'd get a slightly better deal. Too bad you can't work out a different system. Like she watches your daughter for half an hour before school and you do her yard work on the weekends or something. Then you wouldn't have out of pocket expenses and you'd be helping each other out.

*Just read your update. I think its kinda crummy to charge someone when you are doing the exact same thing anyway. What happened to carpools and things like that? Maybe you could still work out a deal. Maybe she could take them to school and you could pick them up. *shrug* I personally wouldn't charge my neighbor money for taking her daughter to school when I'm going there anyway. I would just simply ask that she be willing to help me out sometimes too. I use to ride in a carpool when I was in school and it was never a big deal. The mom across the street was taking her daughter to the same school, so I just rode with them. There was NEVER a money issue. I was just expected to be ready, on time and courteous. That's it.

$5 doesn't seem like a lot, however, when she is going that way anyway..you are paying $100.00 a month for that service which can be a lot for some people who are on a budget and have children.
I would maybe suggest seeing if you can work something out with her where in return for her dropping off your kid along with hers..you in turn maybe offer to take her child once or twice a month for an afternoon or at night so she can do things done around the house, go out on a date with her hubby or so she can just get that much needed afternoon nap.
Good luck.

I pay $3.00 a hour if it is for a good amount of time. Sometimes I go by how much money I have on me. Might give more. However yeah 5 bucks might not sound like a lot to some but if they are watching your child everyday that adds up. specially if it is only 30 min a day for a week that is 40 bucks for 3 1/2 hours. I would talk to them and see what you can work out.

Is this woman already going to the school?

If she has to get up, washed, changed and make the effort to come take her to school when she could be in bed.. then 5 dollars is fine.

At the end of the day 5 dollars is a small price to pay in order to get ur child to school safe.

I think the price is fair, but the paying a neighbor does seem wierd to me - if you live that close and the kids play together you could even out the time you watch them. Maybe babysit their kid so they can go out for 4-5 hours one night a week, if they're into that?

$5 is very inexpensive. To think about the freedom she is giving you by not having to take that time out of your day to take her to school and to know she is safe for only $5. I think you have a very good setup. I would have thought it should be around $10-$15, because for her to spend all that time for only $5 is a little amount.

I own and operate a day care out of my home. I charge flat rate of $5 for any child only in my care for an hour or less. $3 per hour for 1-10 hours a day.

I think 5 dollars is reasonable. What would you do if she didn't help out? I am sure a daycare would charge more than that for 45 minutes. Plus...you know she is getting to school safely...

I wouldn't ask anything! 45 minutes is nothing. But hey! you gotta take what you can get. I wouldnt ask anyone to pay that though. My son is in Kindergraten and I keep two boys in his class who live on our street from 3-5 with no pay. The kids have fun and it isn't bothering me any!
