Sometimes when a cat is straining in the litterbox, it can be hard to determine whether the cat is straining to urinate or defecate. Because you’ve observed that she is urinating, it sounds like a constipation problem. Take your cat to the veterinarian to make sure that this is simple constipation, and not a more serious condition called megacolon, in which the colon loses the ability to contract and propel the feces.
Sometimes cats become constipated from swallowing excessive hair during grooming. Other times, they become constipated for no apparent reason. Try administering one of the hairball remedies, such as Laxatone or Petromalt to your cat. When given two or three times a week, these products are effective at hairball prevention. When given every day, they work well as stool softeners. If these products do not help, a change in diet might be warranted. Your veterinarian can advise you in this regard. I’ve had excellent success using the Low Residue diet made by the Iams Company. If constipation continues to be a problem, more potent medications, such as lactulose and cisapride, might be best.

Well, adding in some wet food now and then helped my female cat who was always getting constipated. I have also started to give her Petromalt, which helps with hairballs and constipation due to hairballs. This too has helped a bit, and it has certainly helped her to cough up the hairballs easier. I would check with your vet about the proper diet for your guy, but I don't think there is any harm in adding in some wet food a few times a week for your kitty. He will think it's a special treat. :)

you could give him some wet food, as well as dry or go to your vet and get some stuff called laxatone, comes in tuna and normal flavour i believe. you just give a small amount on a teaspoon and it helps with constipation as well as hairballs, works great.. lasts a long time! about 10 bucks though!

You may want to try another brand of dry food with a little wet each day as a treat. I spilt one can of Fancy Feast between 5 cats each evening. Gives them just enough variety. Make sure you are leaving him enough water. If the problem continues, see your vet. If he keeps experiencing problems, it can lead to other problems, such as trying to go behind a couch instead of the litter box. Cats may sometimes connect the litter box with movement problems (especially kidney infections, pain urinating) and seek other places to go. Good luck.

I have to make sure my 7 year old goes to the bathroom everyday and if she doesn't, I immediately give her some hairball medicine and I constantly keep an eye on her water intake. She only eats dry so it is a daily thing to watch but I have to so I can make sure she doesn't get sick again. Give him wet food if he likes it and see if you can get him to drink water. If he doesn't have a bowel movement in a day, don't hesitate to take him to the vet because he could possibly quit eating and trust me, that is a horrible time.
