Look at the side opposite the throttle arm. Do you see a round black cover about 2 inches in diameter? Well that is your choke actuator. If you see an electrical connection to it, then it is heated electrically. If you see a metal tube that is screwed into it then it is heated by air that is heated by engine temp and/or exhaust. Others still had heater hoses that ran adjacent to them to speed things up even faster.

It should have what is called an automatic choke. It is controlled by a bimetallic spring that closes the choke when the engine is cold and gradually opens as the engine gets warmer. Some cars have an electric choke heater which speeds the choke opening. Most cars also have what is called a vacuum choke pull-off which opens the choke slightly when the car first starts so the engine does not flood.

If its a vacum operated choke ( with the tube) then its important to make sure that the heat riser valve ( butterfly valve on left exhaust manifold) is working properly , and that the crossover in the manifold is not plugged. Which happens over time. carbon plugs them up and choke stays on too long.

I believe all of them had electric chokes. If you have a choice, go with the electric one and plug off the vacuum source. I would also disable the EFE system as this caused all sorts of problems as well.
