Some 'chain' type salons like the ones in Wal-Mart and such, do offer benefits like any other employer. If you booth rent or just do straight commission at a privately owned shop, you will have to provide your own benefits. I would check with your state health insurance companies and you can usually get on a 'single' plan. It is usually pricey, but sometimes is income based. I have found, over the years, that this is a big issue and a deciding factor as to whether or not stylists actually begin or continue their careers.
