Using biblical scriptures:

"Immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky”, (Matthew 24:29-35 NAB)

IF god and jesus are one in the same, jesus would know that stars are burning balls of gas billions of miles away. In other words, since he created it all, he would know that these stars could not "fall from the sky" because stars wouldn't FALL.

Fall to where, exactly? There is no down in the universe.

PS: This is a DIRECT quote from the Lord Your God. To misconstrue his word is blasphemy. So don't give me the "written by people who didn't know."

Got Air,

Those are called meteorites. Jesus said the Stars. He would know what a meteorite is, he invented them.

CathCrusade,

Explain the quote then o, master of the obvious.

Zen,

All of those definitions work. Blaspheme all you want, it is your belief.

Scott B,

Whiny and ignorant.. Good one. Can you explain the DIRECT quote without giving the "mistranslation" excuse? It is an excuse. Flame baiting. Maybe, but Isn't this proof there is NO GOD?

2007-09-25 07:25:01 · update #3

No Kristi,

Fall from the sky is what he said. Unless you like the mistranslation excuse in which case, Greek "Fall" didn't mean the same thing, which means "THE FALL" from Eden is mistranslated too.

Deslok,

Excellent, fallen stars aren't meteors. WOW. That is a new one. Thanks for the laugh.

Here's the part where they'll claim metaphor and "artistic license"; though how they can determine which parts to take literally and which ones are symbolic, when you're not supposed to need anything other than Scripture itself, is quite beyond me...

Don't tell us how to answer your question if you want honest answers. This isn't a question, it an attack disguised as a question. Let's assess... you do know the true Greek that the new testament was written in, right? That there is no version of the word "fall" that means what the english word "fall" means. That people in the time of Jesus would never understand what start are. In other words, you do know Jesus often talked in analogies and parables so people would understand the meaning of what He was saying. Your problem is the age old problem of context, and linguistics. By the way if a meteor (which by defintion could be a star since the term "star" refers to any object in space which gives off light reflected from the sun, not just other suns.) heads towards Earth today, many would refer to it as "falling" to Earth. So how is the example wrong? You don't have to believe, just stop trying to prove he doesn't exist, according to even atheists you can't prove a neagative. It just makes you look ignorant and a little whiny.

So, the simple dichotomy of either literal or subject to interpretation. Many Christian faiths believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God...infallible, to be exact. Others do not. 1 in 3 Christians believe the bible to be the literal word of god, not up for interpretation. (first link to gallup poll data)

Catholics do not believe in the literal interpretation of the bible (see second reference from americancatholic.org). I assume that the Catholic Crusader is among them, so it is an easy step to say that it's not the word of God, but the word of humans who had limited understanding when they wrote things down (this is apparently the stand of much of the American catholic church). This step then allows one who is Christ-like to call people morons. In true keeping with their tradition of respect and love for all things...except those who don't think like them. But I digress.

The problem is, your argument is only applicable to about 1/3 of the Christians out there. There is another 2/3 that think the bible is up to some level of interpretation. So...with that kind of view, it would be impossible to ask them to explain your question. It simply wouldn't apply to them, because they reject your premise.

it is a good question, though. The scripture, if NOT taken literally, would be a good description of a huge volcanic eruption, or perhaps a large meteor strike on the surface of earth.

One last note, simply because while I agree your question has value, you have not taken into account even our own modern usage of language. The term Falling Star is defined as a meteor. (3rd link). I think it's best when having these kinds of discussions to stick to data that can be sourced. I don't really think it's that hard of a thing for us to imagine someone thousands of years ago describing meteors as falling stars when we still use the term today in common speach.

The sun can be, as some of us have witnessed--in person--darkened by a full eclipse of the moon, while at the same time, it will not shine. In fact it is very eerie, and another name for falling "stars" is meteorite. Of course, falling stars were named way before our time, even before they knew what to call those objects that streak through the atmosphere during the night. The Perseid's are very famous. Watch them sometime, they are very cool--especially on a romantic night. One last thing, you should lose the tone, because all it does it make you look mad.

I have to agree you will the classic this metaphor or for the lay person of the time type explanation.

Hooey!

They are so full of it. Either it is the word of god or it isn't.

The arrow must still hurt, Achilleus. Poetic imagery is lost on the hero of the Iliad? What Irony! How would you describe things to shepherds in an age before mass literacy?
Blasphemy is contorting the Word in such a way as to mislead others. Check out Dante for more revelations (!) in poetic license.

Would it really matter to you what we said about this? Do you really care what our belief are about this?
I think (my opinion) you have already made up your mind and closed it to any explanation of it.
It's hard to keep an open mind on so many things in this world, but keeping it open gives you a better understanding of this world.
So, I don't think that whatever I have to say about this piece of scripture is going to make a difference to you.

The bible is man made but I have proof God does exist.

There is no medical reason my daughter is still alive yet she thrives, she smiles, loves and to the amazement of doctors can sit and stand on 1 foot. She is here to prove God decicides life and death the only time her health improved was prayers my a large quantity of people. Against all odds and denials of medical care she lives on and only through the divine intervention of Gods love. The pollution of man scrambled her chromosome's but God still wanted her to live as proof no life is a mistake or waste. For 15 years God has made his presence evident in my life. In every way and everyday. I as a mere human do not fully understand his purpose but continue his work in any opportunity such as this to proclaim he is with us. Everyday in every way. If you ask his help if he believes it would fit his plan for you, you will have his help. The help is in Gods time and through those on Earth making themselves available to his instructions.

Did God create everything that exists?

Does evil exist?

Did God create evil?

A University professor at a well known institution of higher

learning challenged his students with this question. "Did God create

everything that exists?"

A student bravely replied, "Yes he did!"

"God created everything?" The professor asked.

"Yes sir, he certainly did," the student replied.

The professor answered, "If God created everything; then God created evil.
And, since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define
who we are, then we can assume God is evil."

The student became quiet and did not answer the professor's

hypothetical definition. The professor, quite pleased with himself,

boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the

Christian faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said, "May I ask you a question,
professor?"

"Of course", replied the professor.

The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?"

"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you

never been cold?" The other students snickered at the young man's

question.

The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the
laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat.
Everybody or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy,
and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy.

Absolute zero (-460 F) is the total absence of heat; and all matter becomes
inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist.
We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat."

The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?"

The professor responded, "Of course it does."

The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist
either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study,
but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to break white light
into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You
cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of
darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is?
You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a
term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?"

Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have already said.
We see it everyday. It is in the daily examples of man's inhumanity to man.
It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These
manifestations are nothing else but evil."

To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does
not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like
darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of
God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man
does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that
comes when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes when there is no
light."

The professor sat down.

In Matthew he is talking about in the end of days. During the tribulation in the book of Revalation the sun, stars and moon will not give light or it will not produce as much light as they do now.

Well, if I watched the science channel correctly, our sun IS supposed to darken eventually. Therefore, the moon will not reflect light. Also, there is a huge asteroid headed our way in the next 20 or so years (falling star?!). And if those "goat hearders" were such idiots, how would they have known that?
