Better question: Why is marknerd18 answering questions in the pet forum when he's obviously not an animal lover? Showing emotion to one event does not indicate how anyone will react to another, Mark. I did not cry when my grandmother died, though I loved her very much, but I bawled for days when my dog died. Being upset when you accidentally kill an animal, which is a normal human response, doesn't mean ANYTHING about how "well equipped" you are to handle any other disasters. Grow up and stop hassling this poor woman because you're in a bad mood.

In response to the topic: I'm so sorry. I've been fortunate enough never to hit anything in my car, but I know that's just luck and not due to some amazing animal-avoidance skill, and I know if I ever do I will be a complete basket-case. One of my friends hit a squirrel once and she was inconsolable for two days. I think being this shaken up over a cat, especially when you have cats of your own, is totally normal. I am upset every time I see an animal on the side of the road, and come home to hug my kitties just like you.

Good for you for having your husband do something.. I hate seeing dogs and cats at the side of the road, as though stopping to move them would be too much hassle... when they're someone's pets. And I am doubly impressed that you are donating to the SPCA - what a wonderful thing to do and it really addresses the actual cause of the problem, which was the kitten (stray or not) running around outside and not you driving along a road minding your own business.

One or two pound kitten versus a 3,000 pound car - no contest. There was nothing you could have done to prevent this, and in fact you've acted to prevent it from happening again even though you weren't at fault. I'm sure it will take you awhile to recover from this shock (as is understandable) but at least know it wasn't your fault and you've done everything possible to right the situation. Best of luck to you.

I think your idea of contributing to an animal rescue group is a wonderful tribute. Unfortunately, outdoor cats have lower life expectancies than indoor cats and this is just one of the reasons why. I was just reading about teens out west who gun down livestock for thrills. Therefore, to read this and to see how much someone cares really was nice, even though it is also tragic in the sense that it happened at all. I have never run over a cat but I once hit a dog and felt horrible. It was not dead but it limped off. I love animals so I know how awful it feels. But you are obviously a kind and compassionate person. Again, the contribution to the SPCA is great especially since so many kittens are running loose because of out of control overpopulation due to people not spaying or neutering. The kitten, quite possibly, belonged to no one. Best of luck to you.

These things happen. All the time. Kittens dont know the dangers of the road. It is not your fault. the kitten did not single you out to torture you. You did exactly what you needed to do, which is more than many people would do, by making sure that the animal was in fact dead, and not lying in suffering, and than arranging for it to be removed from the road way. You did the responsible thing, thank you for that. Im sorry that it saddens you so, it just shows that you are a caring person. Thank you for that too.

Oh you poor thing. That's terrible, I would feel the same way. One day I was driving to work and I saw a kitten dead on the street. It must have been hit over night. It was so sad. I cried all the way to work (1 Hour) and pretty much most of the day. I have 2 cat's so the thought of having them hit hurts inside and makes me really sad.

I know that you didnt mean to do it. Cat's do run out and not think. Dont be so hard on yourself.

Awww, I can understand how you feel. I think the best thing to do would be to find the owners, if you haven't already, and explain what happened. If you apologize to them, it may make you feel better. Next, have a funeral in your backyard. Pretend the kitten is buried there and place a flower or something pretty on the spot. Then say a few words apologizing to the kitten. I know it sounds silly, but I think it will help you feel better. If it feels too silly to do that, write a letter to the kitten. You made a mistake. It happens sometimes, but you have to forgive yourself.

Finally, do something nice for yourself. Have a nice meal or watch a movie you really like. Try to distract yourself. I know it must feel awful. but things like this happen. Best of luck.

That has happened to me too. It's not your fault. Kittens just start running and don't know to stop and look for cars. It's horrible but you couldn't help it. I pulled the kitty out of the road and went the nearest house. It was their kitten and they went and buried it. I know you feel horrible. Sorry you're going through this. ♥
When my cat died I went to the shelter I got her from to donate and found they were having a drive to spay/neuter low income family cats. Dixie sponsored 2 cats to be fixed. Contributing this way is wonderful.

I am so sorry!! Bless you for stopping and for being concerned. It is horrible I know. Who knows why they run out there like that, they could have seen someone or something across the road and made a run for it. Shame on the people who had the kitten for even letting it outside. I am so sorry and I hope that you find some peace. accidents do happen

I'm sorry this accident hurt you so much. Just look at it this way, did you intentionally mean to hit the kitten. Of course not so that means it was an accident. You did not intend it to happen. Pray for the kitten and know that God has his reasons for everything. There is a plan for all of us including the kitten.
God bless you. You are a good person.

Our cats (we've 2) ran up and down the hallway like bullets, usually interior the morning while that they have been put in the laundry with their foodstuff, water, clutter tray, bedding and so on. all night. he's purely hard himself ;) Our cats nonetheless try this (they are almost 2 yrs previous now) sometimes because of the fact they choose to sleep on our beds as quickly as we are there.

It was an accident, sad as it is.
Animals don't know the dangers of vehicles running over them. This is why there's so much roadkill!
Don't bop yourself on the head for something that happened in a quick moment.
It would be worse if you had tried to avoid an animal, swerved away from it and hit a lampost or something and hurt yourself or your son or both of you in a crash.
