I highly doubt that the peanut butter is the culprit in this situation. I know A LOT of people who give their dogs either straight peanut butter or treats that have peanut butter in them. A good thing to do would be to spread a teeny bit of peanut butter inside a Kong toy or a hollow bone and then freeze it to make it more difficult to get out. Make sure that when you leave him, don't make a big deal about it and give him plenty to do. There are a lot of new food stuffable toys available -- I personally really like the Busy Buddy Twist-and-Treats, Everlasting Fun Ball and the Kongs. Also, make sure that he has something to chew on in order to sooth himself and it is always nice to have something to snuggle with!
There are MANY reasons why your dog may have diarrhea. The anxiety can make their stools loose, as can going too often, food allergies or parasites. The first thing I would do is rule out any medical reasons with your vet and then begin crate training. The following is a good schedule for training:

Be sure to take it nice and slow when you begin to acclimate your dog to the crate. Always give him special treats and NEVER, EVER use it to punish him. You'll be amazed at how soon your dog will begin to think of it as his safe place!

Try a kong toy. You ca fill it with peanut butter, so he will only be able to get a little bit at a time.
Does he only have diarrhea after eating peanut butter or at other times?
If it is only after eating peanut butter, then you can try giving him less. Make sure it is pure peanut butter, just peanuts. Some peanut butter has a lot of sugar, oil and other ingredients. That might be what is causing his upset tummy.
Don't make a big deal out of leaving or coming home, like telling him bye or making a fuss over him.
He has to get used to your coming and going.

Peanut butter is probably irritating his stomach - try wrapping a ticking clock in a soft towel or leaving a t-shirt one of you have worn in his bed. For chew toys get some toys at the local pet store tell them what type of dog you have and they will be happy to point the way. Some dogs like bones and others may prefer the squeaker type or even a tennis ball may do the trick. I also recommend you leave a radio on so he doesn't feel alone in the quite house. Good Luck!

the reason your dog is crying is because it thinks your abandoning it and having a ritual before you leave the house is only going to make it worse. stop feeding his anxiety with peanut butter of all things try leaving the house without your coat and bag and peanut butter for 5 then give the dog peanut butter and stay in etc so the anxiety leaves drop. your dog shouldn't have that much peanut butter in his diet anyway but between it and the anxiety I'm surprised your dog is not a peeing & pooping machine

There is a list of foods that a dog shouldn't eat and I think peanuts is one of those foods.
Just give him a toy or a soft blankie to occupy him. He will get used to being along after a while.
I would search the net for foods that dogs can't eat. Chocolate is also on the list that they can't eat.

I don't know about the diarrhea, my dog's never had a problem with it, but you could always by a kong toy-or something like it. With them you can put dog treats inside and they have to work to get it out. It keeps them busy for quite a while.

Peanuts (all nuts) are NO NO's for dogs. They will eventually lead to kidney and liver failure.
Other bad for pups foods:
onions
grapes
apple cores
pop corn
Give him one of your worn t-shirts or sweat shirts. Your scent will comfort him. Add a wind-up alarm clock, tick tick... Treats are not recommended as substitutes for you.
