the ability to keep the emulsion in as close contact to the paper as possible (hence the name). If there is a gap between the emulsion of the negative and the photo paper, the image will be out of focus as light will scatter around each grain of silver on the negative. Place a sheet of clean glass over the negatives, keeping them flat against the paper

If you want to be official about it, you can get a contact print easel, but that's just a sheet of double thick glass hinged to a based. It makes it easier not to get your fingerprints on the glass. Here are a couple of samples:
