My Ford Explorer is out of warranty and has 40,000 miles on it. When I get it up to 25 mph, but no faster, I hear a thud like it is shifting hard in the transmission. Before I take it to a mechanic so they can lie to me and tell me I need a new transmission, has anyone else had this problem?

If you have 40k on it now would be the time to have a transmission service done on it , that may solve your problem and its like $30.Any oil change place can do that and its cheaper than a dealer. It sounds like its the U- joint ,also not very expensive . I would look at that first, just grab the drive shaft jerk it and twist it you'll know if its worn.

You might want to try a transmission service before you go to extreme lengths.... the problem might actually be that simple people are so focused on oil change they dont service the transmission.....which causes it to back up also im not sure if that model has overdrive but check that to...

you need to get the transmission reprogrammed . you may want to to change your fluid and filter if the vehicle shudders.
This will fix your concern

Yes I had..... it could be the shifting solonoid pack..... in my case needed a new trans.... I was lucky and purchased the extended warranty..... get one when you get your trans fixed.
