Is there such a thing as job security? I unfortunately, work in the health care field, and my job does not offer insurance. I also work at an animal rescue, non-profit group and they don't offer insurance either. I tried to buy the insurance myself, but BC/BS, anthem, etc, are about $500 a month for a single mom and two kids, plus there was a $5,000 deductable!! What was the point. So I am one of the many of Americans who cannot afford health care coverage, yet does not qualify for any government assistance. And before anyone say, well you should just change jobs,(lori K.) I work for one of the biggest hospitals in the U.S. and they don't offer insurance to anyone who works less than 40 hours a week, and they won't give anyone 40 hours. And there isn't alot of other place to work here in Ohio, we have the highest unemployment in the US.

I've never had a job that DIDN'T offer health insurance. My children have worked fast food and have gotten the option of health insurance.

The problem is that many people opt NOT to choose the health insurance that their employers offer. It's a shame. Employers can offer group rates that the individual can't get. Even very small employers can band together (and usually do) to get group rates. Some people will gamble and opt to have the extra money in their paycheck rather than pay a small percentage of their own health insurance.

My husband works for a very large company. We chose the very best available insurance for our family and pay about $600 a month for it. Our options could have been as inexpensive as $150 (HMO) for a family of 4.

I think that the health care problem could be pretty much eliminated if the government just required everyone to accept one of their company's plans. (Sometimes there IS only one, of course). That would just about take care of any family that had at least 1 person working legally. Of course, the indigents are already cared for.

I had to come down hard on one of my daughters and her husband who felt (at age 23 and 25) that insurance wasn't really necessary and they'd just prefer using the money for vacations. Not a wise decision. They like MANY others chose to be uninsured. Stupid

No job is completely secure unless you work for the government. You should always plan for some time out of work to job hunt. Luckily, COBRA extends your coverage for that period. Make sure you save for a rainy day...you can live without cable tv, new cars, designer clothes and cell phones to put a little money away. Seriously.

No jobs these days are secure. I know many think they are, but then are quite surprised as to how easily replaceable they are....so therefore your insurance isn't either. Many people are working with benefits and each year are seeing more and more taken away from the package they were originally offered.

Job security is the oxymoron of the 2000s

It's security is dependent upon my performance. I choose to not have insurance - I am not wasting 400 dollars a month with a 1500 dollar deductible for something I don't use. I need those thousands to pay down my mortgage.

Mine is EXTREMELY secure, I'm home with the kids.

My husband's is pretty secure, and has excellent medical. He has a "unique" position within his company that would be very difficult to find a replacement for (due to the variety of responsibilities and training necessary).

my husbands job is not very secure at all even though we have health insurance. He is a contract worker, so if they decide to let him go for whatever reason, we are in trouble.

Seems like the way to go is with a public job. Education, IRS, police, govt. jobs will always have awesome benefits.
