I remember in 7th grade home-ec class we made a jello cake. we used a regular boxed cake mix and made the cake like normal, but then we put holes in it with a fork and poured jello mix liquid over the cake, does anyone know of the recipe for this? I can't remember if we made the jello like usual or decreased the water...

I think the jello had the water decreased by half. And the frosting was instant pudding and cool whip. I have the recipe at home, if you don't get a decent answer by then I'll edit this.

Well that recipe is ok but the frosting isn't how I remember it. Do they still sell Dream Whip? I guess a small tub of cool whip would work instead. You can vary the jello flavors.

Jello Pudding Cake

1 pkg cherry jello (4 oz)
1 package cake mix

for topping:
1 envelope Dream Whip
1 package vanilla instant pudding
1 teaspoon vanilla

Dissolve 3/4 cup water. Add 1/2 cup cold water, set aside at room temperature. Make cake in 13x9" pan. Cool cake 20-25 minutes. Poke deep holes through top of warm cake (still in pan) with meat fork or toothpick, one inch apart. With a cup, slowly pour gelatin mixture into holes. Refrigerate cake, while preparing topping

Topping
In a chilled bowl, blend and whip topping mix, instant pudding, cold milk and vanilla until stiff (3-8 minutes). Immediately frost cake. Cake must be stored in refrigerator and serve chilled. Frosted cake may be frozen for storage.

Prepare jello according to package instructions except do not allow it to set yet.

Here is the recipe:

This is the moistest cake you will ever eat. I love it with strawberry jello and garnished with fresh strawberries. The Cool Whip makes such a pretty pure white and creamy frosting. It was my mom's favorite birthday cake. Prep time is also chill time

1 (18 ounce) box white cake mix
3 eggs (or as called for by your cake mix)
1/3 cup butter or oil (or as called for by your cake mix)
1 cup water (or as called for by your cake mix)
1 (3 ounce) box any flavor Jello gelatin
Cool Whip (for frosting)
fruit (to match the jello flavor)

Prepare cake according to package instructions.
Allow to cool completely in pans.
Using a fork, poke holes all over the top of the cake through to the bottom.
Prepare jello according to package instructions except do not allow it to set yet.
Pour jello slowly over the entire surface of the cooled cakes (cake will look soggy, but thats ok).
Chill cakes until jello sets completely (several hours or over night).
To remove cakes from pans, set the pan in a dish of hot water for 1 minute.
Remove to a serving platter.
Frost with the Cool Whip.
Garnish with fruit pieces.
Keep any uneaten cake covered and chilled.

The way we always did it was after the cake was done and before the cake was cooled down, polk holes all in it, we would pour either pudding to match the cake all in the holes and then all over the cake. OR we would mix packages of different flavors of jello and pour in the holes. Let it set and cool down and then put the cool whip on it.
