Hence the myth of the Wandering Jew -- that one of his followers was made immortal and still hanging around out there, so that the promise of returning in their lifetimes would not yet be invalidated....

He did not say that he would "return" before his followers died. He said that they would see the Kingdom of God before they died. The synoptic Gospels all interpret the transfiguration on Tabor as the appearance of the Kingdom of God on earth. This fact is often obscured by bad theology and and an unnecessary chapter break in the text.

In the Olivet Discourse, Jesus predicted the fall of Jerusalem with 40 years. That, of course, is exactly what happened.

The verse in Matthew 24 has a duel meaning. Some of the things hes referring to are end times, some are the 70AD destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. The generation in question obviously refers to the destruction of Jerusalem.

What He said, specifically, was that some among them would SEE Him return, not that they would still be alive when He did.

Read Revelations. John saw Jesus return.

Jesus kept His word, though it wasn't in the way they thought He would.

If you read the Book of Revelation, John did see Jesus return. It was in vision, but he still saw it.
