I don't think that should be the right question to ask. In all cases you should ask,
"What are WE doing to help people that suffer?
Now, suffer from what specifically?
As human beings we like to judge others who's creed is different from ours, but we don't do anything either to help others.
I think you should ask yourself what are YOU doing for those people, after you have find at least one thing, then you can ask others.

Some Christian will help and some Christians wont all are not of the same mind.
Some will have compassion and some will say do you want me to feel sorry for you, well i don't, and they are the ones first in the queue to try to get into heaven.

Depending on their needs...but prayer is the ultimate a believer can do. A Christian will sacrifice for their fellow brother/sister, provide of themselves if nothing else. Donating time if that is all you have. Christians believe in helping believers and non-believers alike, as Christ did! Be blessed, friend!

Most charity organisations were started by Christians. Christians are the most likely out of any religion to go and do mission trips in poverty countries. Most Christians give generously. Gosh, what do Christians not do!

Tell them about God who doesn't exept them from suffering in this life, but gives them the strength to cope and the hope of a new world where there'll be no suffering.
"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort."
2 Corinthian 1:3-7
For the Christian, suffering isn't a nilistic (sic!), meaningless experience. Its through the sufferings of Christ that we have hope that even though we suffer, we too like Christ will be raised from the dead and will join him in heaven.

I donate to the United Way and the Red Cross... I know that realistically, only about 60% of what I donate actually goes to helping these people, but that 60% is much more efficient than 100% if I gave it to random bums on the street.
Organizational synergies are just dandy!!
