you know here we tell people : go to the vet, go the vet....

My border collie stopped eating suddenly, after few days, I took her to the vet (what else was I supposed to do?) , he thought it was one bad tooth (not true, because I saw her chewing a toy with both sides fo her mouth), then after a couple of days of watering down the food, still not eating, we did blood tests: nothing - stool samples: nothing....she would only eat if I put a treat on top of her bowl... so I finally bought new food, and mix it to her usual food, and bingo Miss princess eats! and when I don't put anything with her food, she does not eat...

is it possible that suddenly a dog stops liking his/her food? and refuses to eat it based on taste???

After spending so much money, I feel stupid. I suspected it could be that but wnated to be sure... did I go to the vet too soon?

It is and it can be a sign of health issues. My parents dog refused to eat some food when she is ill (real bad hips now) and stopped eating the can food. My dog also would not eat some can food that had been in the fridge, I believe he thought it was too old and had something wrong with it. Dogs can smell things that we can not detect. Something may be wrong with the food, maybe a bad batch or it is contaminated, Some dogs will get picky. It is sounding as if something was wrong with the food or maybe it was starting to upset her stomach so she refused to eat it but with the new food it was not bad. You were concerned so there is no reason to feel stupid, after all now you know she is in good health, I think you did the right thing. Better safe than sorry. I am studying to be an animal care specialist and I have taken my new puppy to the vet over scratching because I felt bad and thought they could help, which they couldn't find the cause so now back down to guessing and trying new things.

Collies are herding dogs, when they herd sheep they nip at them, it's a behaviour that comes naturally to them after years and years and years of breeding it into them. He eats the poo because even poo has a certain amount of taste and nutrients in it, and as for rolling in the poo, there are a couple of theories about why they do this. Some think that they do it so that they can take the smell back to the 'pack' with them (when dogs are seperated the first thing they do when they meet again is a lot of sniffing to smell what they have been doing) and there is also the theory that they do it just because they like the smell.

No dog will let itself starve. Put her food down at the usual time(s) and if she doesn't eat it withing a minute take it away. Don't let her trick you into putting it down again. Next feed time, put her food down again and if it's refused, take it away. She will soon learn that food time is food time. Try not to give her tit bits to make up for her not eating. It's very hard on you but better for her in the long run. Feed time should be calm with no distractions, make sure she has been to the loo first.

i always say better safe than sorry. You probably did go to the vet 2 soon, if you dog was not showing any other symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, fever, being lethargic etc. However most people on this board write things like" my dog won't eat,has blood in her stool, what do i do" and in this case i think the obvious answer is VET.
Dogs can get spoiled, if they realize that not eating their food will lead to getting yummier food. although some dogs will "starve" themselves if they don't wanna eat. and yes dog can get bored with their kibbles.

Some dogs (like mine) Is a very picky and after a while get tired of eating the same old food. Next time you get food for him/her pick up a diffrent flavor like the kibbles in bits homestyle.

Don't feel stupid, you did the right thing. you are a good responsible dog parent, and i love to hear that there are people out there like me.

Anyway......My boxer stopped eating, and we tried switching not brands, but switching the type of food, and she loves it now. nothing wrong with her, she was just picky.

Thank God That your dog is doing well, and Thank God for people like you!!!

she trained you that if she doesn't get her treat in the bowl she won't eat and you have since bought into it. She won't starve herself. I bet in those two days she refused to eat she got other foods from the table or treats?

My dog would only eat her Iams as a last resort. I changed to Canidae and she eats it up!
