How long does it take to get into Manhattan? We are staying just one night in New York, and I am wondering if it is going to be a waste of our time staying over in Newark. I waited until the last minute to book a hotel and everything in the city is full and/or unbelievably expensive. Advice?

Staying in Long Island also looks like an option. Is that better or worse?

If you're staying in Newark, you can get on the PATH train, which is like the subway, but only connects some New Jersey towns with Manhattan. It has its own fare system, so you won't be able to use a Metrocard 1-day pass. It's about 15-20 minutes.
You can also take NJ Transit train from downtown Newark or Newark Airport. It takes about 20 minutes, but is more expensive than PATH.
Forget Long Island, because the train will have to make several stops in Brooklyn and Queens before it gets into Manhattan.

I would recommend taking the M60 bus (fare = $2 off a MetroCard) out of La Guardia. Get off at the Lenox Avenue stop [ask the driver if you need help identifying where this stop is]. Take the downtown 2/3 subway (Metrocard again, should be a free transfer if you're paying per ride) to the Park Place stop. Exit the subway turnstiles and follow signs for PATH-World Trade Center Station (this is about a 3-block walk but you can do it in the underground passageway) and then go into the PATH turnstiles (fare = $1.50, you can use a MetroCard). Then catch a Newark-bound PATH train... It's a little complicated, but doable and cheap.

The NYC subway doesn't go into New Jersey.
The Path train is a New Jersey train/Subway line that goes from New Jersey into New York City. You can take the Path train in to the city from Newark. In the city the path has two lines - one ends at the world trade center and the other ends at 33rd street.

You can take the train too....it's not a far ride (about 20 minutes or so).

Just go from Newark Penn St. or Newark Airport and take the train to NYC Penn Station.
I wouldn't bother staying in Long Island...it will end up taking longer to get into the city.

PATH is like the subway. Take the train from Newark Penn Station to World Trade Center. If you're heading to midtown transfer at Journal Square for the 33rd street train.
