until recently I played only Maxfli golf balls. While trying to add a few yards to my drive, I tried the Titleist ProV1x. I like the ball, it feels great and liked the results. However, at the end of the round, I had a ball that had brown scuffs on it. They didn't wash off and I am assuming they are from impact. Is this because of the difference between the soft cover as compared to the harder cover of the cheaper balls? I want a ball that is long off the tee, any suggestions.

Yes they are from impact, but it's the paint scuffing off. The underlying surface is actually a tan shade. For the "best" ball around, they didn't bother to fix that issue for the last five years.
I switched to the NXT Tour a year ago, and they are about 5 yards longer in most situations. However, they have their own cover issues. The dimples wear very quickly. My game does not demand excellence so it's not that big a deal though. At almost half the cost I like them just fine. Good luck.

ProV1 golf balls have a tendency to become dull after they have been played for a while. (The exact time I don't know, because I don't use them, but I find a lot of them on the course)
That being said, any soft cover ball will get scuff marks from a variety of sources such as a mishit (Skull, toe shot), also if you do not clean the dirt from the grooves on your club, they too will provide scuff marks, and anything on the course that is harder than the cover of the ball.(Rocks, trees, bushes)
If you want a nice white ball instead of improved play, then go back to a ball with a harder cover.

If you have newer clubs with sharp grooves that will scuff the ball when ever you hit it. Pro-v 1 is a soft ball and I use the same ball for 18 holes baring I don't knock OB or in the Water. The ball still plays go enough with a few scuffs on it.

For a swing speed of 90, have you tried any of the lower compression balls like Maxfli Noodle, Titleist DTSo-Lo, Precept Laddie, etc....?

I have never had that problem with a Pro V1. I play them 50 rounds a year exclusively. Your ball probably hit the cart path or a rock or something. Either that or you have some real sandy greens, or some real sharp grooves on your clubs.

I love the maxfi it has a hard cover the titlest has a soft cover for longer distance nike is a very good ball

This is why pros like tiger phil ernie vijay etc. switch balls like every 3 or 4 holes

Mine don't. Make sure your clubface and grooves are VERY clean.
