yes, i think alot of crew members would just try to be friendly "just to get tips."
but then there are the ones who are just naturally outgoing and friendly
and then there are ones which may like to make friends.
it just depends.

I have worked on cruise ships for over 10 years. Personally I have never been interested in keeping contact with passengers after the cruise (or during the cruise for that matter). I know many crew are genuinely interested in befriending passengers and staying in contact after the cruise. But many just remember you name in the hope they will get more tips.

Crew members don't get much time off and if there is an internet station onboard for crew members there are usually only a couple computers available. I was on a ship with about 1200 crew and we had only 6 computers for crew internet.

These are very busy people. If they keep in touch with one person from every cruise, that would be about 40 people per year. After three years that is 120 people and at even one minute per e-mail that is two hours of just e-mails.

I would think one e-mail per week would be fine.

The crew members are friendly because that is part of their job. Yes, by being friendly they will get more tips, but even on ship where tipping is not necessary, the crew members are still very friendly.

I think it depends on the person. I cruised this time last year for my honeymoon out of NYC on Carnival Legend. We had a great head waiter. My husband exchanged email addresses with him and they have kept in touch ever since. He often sends us pics from new ports.

They are very busy and have very little free time. Be glad you made friends - and try to sail with that ship again to renew your friendship.
They meet a new "swarm" of people every week - it's hard to keep up.

That's part of the job.
