What exactly is Grits? I have heard many people speak about it. I'm from Canada...so I think it's a dish from the USA.

Thanks in Advance

It's the Southern version of polenta, both are made with coarsely ground corn.
In the South, grits usually accompany eggs and bacon/sausage at breakfast. The grits look like a coarse mound of Cream of Wheat, usually with some butter on them.
When I lived in the North, we ate grits like cream of wheat. I put a bit of butter on the hot grits first, let it melt, then add cream and sugar. Very good.
Grits are versatile and one of my favorite casseroles is grits with salsa and a lot of cheese.
A coastal favorite is shrimp and grits. The shrimp are lightly dusted with fine crumbs (like Panko), fried, and served with hot grits and butter.
Grits can also be eaten at other meals. One of my favorites is with fried fish and fresh sliced tomatoes, a good combination.
Another good combination is smother fried steak with gravy and grits.

Grits is cooked mush made from dried corn kernels that have been treated with lye to degerminate and dehull the corn.

Grits can be cooked whole kernels or cooked ground corn.

Grits are also called Hominy Grits, which is the full name.

The Southern states are known for grits, I'm from the North but I like them too! They are made from corn, here is a website that tells about them.
