I've had sedation about four times now. They do numb your gum, but only after you are sedated. The last thing you will remember is the injection in the back of your hand then you slowly drift off...

I recently had a back tooth removed and all that was required was a simple injection in the surrounding gum. You can feel movement but certainly no pain. It took 30 seconds., & the tooth I had removed was well bedded in.
Different kettle of fish if the extraction is a complicated one, a different method of sedation might be required.

Having the needle is far better than being sedated. I assure you its fine and will be over before you know it. You won't feel the pain at all and they can rub a little gel on your gum to numb it a bit before the needle. You can only feel a little tugging sensation but not pain when they remove the tooth. The sedative makes you feel sickish. With the needle you feel okay just a little numb still but this will wear off very quickly.

It will depend on the dentist, but here's how I had mine done a couple weeks ago.

First, they hooked me up to an oxygen line and pumped some laughing gas through. Then, when I didn't mind much, they stuck me in the hand. After that, they shot me in the mouth with the numbing stuff, and then they knocked me out entirely. I had one tooth pulled, which healed quickly and wasn't much trouble, but the other three were impacted and needed to be sliced out of my gums. Those required a really hideous recovery period of a little more than a week.

Some dental offices give you a pill for "sedation". You take it about an hour before your appointment. You will need to be driven to your appointment and again driven home. You'll be sedated just enough so that you are unaware of the treatment that you are getting. No intravenous tubes or needles!!

Sedation dentistry is defintely the way to go if you are scared to death of dentists (like me), and if you have lots of dental problems (again like me), and this way they can do years of dental treatments in one or two visits. Its also good for those that don't take freezing well (mmhmmm like me).

I would definitely recommend sedation dentistry for anyone with the above issues.

Hi. I work as a surgical assistant for a practice that has 6 oral surgeons who all do IV sedation. They will start and IV in either your hand, wrist, or your arm and give you 'sleepy, forgetful' medications through there. They then numb you after you are asleep. I hope this helps, this is very routine surgery and these guys do this all day everyday, it will end up being a fairly pleasant experience.

It's really not that bad. I had a wisdom tooth pulled. They just numbed my gum really well. That was all that was needed. You just feel tugging. Not bad at all. Afterwards was controlled with Motrin. No gas, no sedation, just a shot in the gums. (which doesn't hurt, just a little pinch)

I always go this way after being abused by a childhood dentist. Its great. I have to have valium now to even attend privately, having been let down by the dental anxiety hospital also.

I would stick with a private sedation dentist if you are phobic.

They numb you too. If they dont you can still break out of the IV, as I did twice with the dental hospital. I dont go there anymore.

yeh they numb your gum, but you def do not want them to put you to sleep for tooth extraction. I had this done when I was a kid, they are more rough with you if you asleep, cuz they can be! I have a jaw thats rarely in line, clicks and clunks all the time since then, and I have heard of many more people that report this. Much better to let them numb the area trust me. im not that keen on being awake for it, but they have to treat you a bit gentler if you are!

yes they do, i had this done coz I'm terrified of the dentist, he said i wouldn't know what they were doing at the time and then afterwards i wouldn't remember anything, it was rubbish i felt a bit groggy but i knew everything they were doing during and after now I'm still scared but i just go through with normal extraction, all the sedation did was made me feel rubbish for the rest of the day.
