Don't know if there is a legal age, but I first stayed in a hotel on my own at the age of 16, although it was booked and paid for by my parents.
I booked and paid for my own hotel room at 17. I was never asked my age, although I always looked older anyway.

You enter into a contract to do so. 18 is the legal age for contracting. Which is to say you can enter into it anyway, but you can't be held to it.
As a practical matter if you walk in like you own the joint. Perhaps joyously proclaming your honeymoon. And a little luck they'll register you. A credit card helps but cash is OK.
If its a run down place the honeymoon idea won't work but they'll need the money. No questions asked.
Go for it son, all they can do is say no.
A motel is more likely to be cooperative. Again a run down one. She'll understand ;-)
BUT if you're going to party its likely you're going to get thrown out so don't waste the money. Or have a very quiet party.

21 or 18 if you are out of town
I used to work in one, and the rules could bend if the 18+ was from out of state.
Best idea is to call the hotel you wish to stay at.

Probably 18. Different hotels would have different regulations with this regard.

If you have a credit card to secure the room, you could be almost any age. Money talks.
