but do any animals appear to appreciate music, and if so how? Before swf2020 begins to go beserk that I am subjecting my cats to techno, for example, my cats seem to tolerate and acknowledge some music and even seem to enjoy it, but they don't dance to it. I know that higher frequencies do their heads in but surely some music as we know it is recognised by animals.

I don't know of any cats or dogs who really seem to enjoy music. Some obviously don't, or they don't enjoy their owners' choice of music - the dogs howl.

However, elephants definitely enjoy music. During the summers here in the Portland, Oregon area there is a series of concerts at a venue at the zoo, and the elephants come over to the closest side of their enclosure and sway to the beat.

I have read news reports and stories posted on the web of animals responding favorably to classical music.

Rock, hard rock, metallic rock and rap music disturb animals of all species and also plants.

It is not in the nature of animals, especially cats, to dance as humans do, to music.

Please do not torture your animals by playing music at a high volume. Doing so can cause negative behavior.

And yes, animals of all species respond to music, just not to the categories I specified above.

Some techno isn't really that bad.

I daresay they do enjoy some music. I know I've had kitties who would watch TV or videos with me.
