On TV, I saw a turkish woman athlete who was black , but apparently she was naturalized ( from Somalia or Ethiopia)
Are there some Black or mixed-race people in Turkey ? And are they Turkish or are they foreign immigrants ?

I rarely see people with black blood. Due to ethnic mixing, mostly their skin colour is quite pale. You can understand the African heritage only by the facial features.
Like my friends said, whatever the ethnic background, they are Turkish. I really wish we had more coloured people. Mixing of genes is beneficial for more than one reasons. Besides, I simply adore black children. (And Asian children, too. And Eskimo children. And Polinesian children... Oh, I give up, all children are adorable.)
And yes, Elvan Abeylegesse is originally Ethiopian. As far as I know, she likes her life here.

Yes, there are black Turks in Turkey. There are also many black people coming from England these days. Just this summer I was talking to this British black man who was staying with a couple of friends in Turkey for his vacation. He said his vacation was great and said he really liked playing volleyball with the people at the beach. He said he was thinking about buying some land or a house to live in.
My opinion is that most come to Turkey after they've lived in a foreign country. I've only met blacks who were coming from England or Northern African countries, but not a native Turk.

Yes. I have had friends that are Black-Turkish. I am not sure about where abouts their ancestors came from. I wish I knew to give more information. I have also read a great article in my university once in Izmir, titled "Being Black in Turkey". It was a great essay.
Note on Ipek's comment: In Ottoman times, there was no slave trade like there was between America and Africa. Servants were hired all around the globe and within the Empire to help in palaces. They were treated fairly. Not all servants were Black either. Some people were actually getting paid in late-Ottoman era to work in mansions of the elite, yet they were not necessarily black. There were also servants of European origins.

Yes there are but they are a small minority in numbers.
Especially in Aydın and İzmir area- The Aegean coast- there are villages with black people whose ancestors came to Turkey during the Ottoman period as slaves and then set free, as residents.
The offspring of there people are mixed with the locals in time. There is actually a few famous singers, dancers and a Beauty Queen among them.
They are all Turkish for at least one hundred years.
There are also a very small minority of children with interracial and international parents but if you compare it to the whole population, the ration shall be very minor.
NOTE: Usourselvesandourcat, There was a slave trade in Ottomans, too especially from the conquered countries. Of course, it was nothing like the ones in US but bear in mind that almost all the harem and the mothers of the Sultans were once slaves : some are bought directly to harem, some are raised by people close tho the Palace and given as gifts to the harem.
If you are interested in this issue, e-mail me, I can advise some books regarding it. :)

There are a couple of mixed kids at the school where I am teaching. One girl has a Turkish mother and an African-American father (he also teaches at the school.) The other has a Nigerian father and a Turkish mother.
