How can I compress each file to less than 50 KB. More importantly, I need to compress all the files at a stretch using some software. Is there any way out? Thanks in advance.

You can do this with many picture optimizer software. Many are free. Some charge for versions that have "batch" option for optimizing many files at a stretch.

Needless to say, one should understand that jpg is one of the most compressed form of image files and further compression means reduction in quality of the image. One can also reduce the actual size of the image to reduce the file size.

I use a free version of a software called image optimizer. Batch version is not free

There are several compression programs available. WinZIP and WinRAR (both available free at http://download.com ) are two of the most used. How much a file will compress depends on the individual picture. One that is mostly one color may compress 70%, while a details multi-color picture only 10-20%. So can not guarantee that you will get a 50% reduction.

The main drawback to a zipped file is that your computer can not use it without first "unzipping" the file. That means it has to return it to its original size before it can use it. That conversion process takes a second or two - so pictures will open slower. It also means that you have to be sure to leave enough free space on your computer that there is room for the uncompressed files when you are using them.
