If you look at the history of the focus, they are nothing but problems. I would not recommend this vehicle.

The Focus has been problematic in the past, but the 2007 has been touted as one of the better Ford vehicles. I've test drove one for Ford, and after 15,000 miles, didn't have any trouble with it, other than the right rear turn signal kept burning out.
In the past few months, Ford has been getting higher and higher quality and reliability ratings, beating out all car companies, except for Honda.

The newer Focus's are supposed to be more reliable than the older ones that were so problematic.
So, on the assumption that they are good cars reliability wise, then I would say get one. They are a good size for a vehicle, get great gas mileage, have lots of options, and some of them even look kinda neat.
I know this is smaller, but have you looked at the Honda Fit? It is much more reliable, better gas mileage, and cheaper, but probably smaller and slower.
Good Luck with whatever you choose!

Honestly I would go a step up and get a fusion. They are slightly bigger and better looking. The focus has improved over the years though. My mom had a focus and never gave her any trouble except regular things that need to be replaced. (brakes, tires, coolant flushes etc.)
