U may either Right click on the unwanted icons and click "Exit" or "Close" otherwise go to Run in the start menu and enter "msconfig" without the quotes. Then go to the start up tab and uncheck all the entries there u find are un necessary. Click ok and restart. When ur computer restarts and returns to the desktop a small window may display-just check the box and click "do not show this......". Third option is to go to Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel and remove the junk software.

You don't "Erase" them. You Disable them. And word of warning, when you go into disable some of the ones that are not nessessary, you need to make sure you know what you are disabling. You do not want to disable your Anti Virus program, you do not want to disable any needed Video or Sound program. You need to research what each program does, so that you know it is safe or not to disable it.
In order to do that....... You will go to your START button and chose RUN . Under RUN you will type in : msconfig
The Configuration Utility screen will appear. You then go to the StartUp (tab). This is where the programs that appear by your clock are listed.
Once your on the startup(tab). You need to take your mouse and hold it over the little line at the top of the list, between the words COMMAND | LOCATION . And once you pass your mouse over that line, you should get a double arrow <---> . Hold down your left mouse button over the line and drag the line between those words over to the right hand side, so that when you view the COMMAND line of each program listed, you are able to see the full path of where the program resides.
C:\Program Files\Yahoo\ypager.exe
Once you can view every programs ending ".exe" name.
Open up your web browser and go to http://www.google.com and search and read about that specific program, what it's function is, and if it's nessessary or not to keep enabled or if it's safe to disable.
Good Luck

Click on the Start button
Select Run from the menu
Type in: msconfig
A window will open, go to the "Start-up"
You will see a listing of everything non-essential to Windows that is being loaded when you start the computer. 90% of the items in the system tray ("geek" name for the area by the clock) will be in that listing.
Uncheck anything you do not want to load on start up. Most people can uncheck ALL of the items. If you change your mind, you can re-check the item(s) to bring them back.

Open the start menu, go to Preferences, choose Activity field and Start menu. At the bottom of the window mark "hide inactive icons" and press the button Adjust.
Now you just click on the icon that you don´t want to see and mark it as always hidden.
Hope you understood, because I haven´t an English version of XP.

You cant erase, but you can prevent them from starting up.
Click start, then click run.. type in msconfig
Be careful doing this.. but go to the Startup tab and look through the list there. You can tell what things are by the program location. Do not uncheck anything that needs to be there.
If you need help with this, lemme know.

The right side of the Taskbar is the "notification area." These things are running in the background. Here is an excellent website which tells you how to manage the Taskbar.

Reinstalling your OS, no rely what version of domicile windows you're employing, competely wipes each little thing off your difficult force and installs domicile windows 'sparkling' lower back. And notice would not contain domicile windows, it must be bought and put in one by one. So, sure, reinstalling domicile windows could do away with notice.

Download and install a tool such as Startup Control Panel from http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
When you launch this program (found in the Control Panel) it will show you all the programs that Windows runs at startup time and let you select which ones of them you don't want to run at startup,
