I live in Maine and my cats never stunk unless sprayed by a skunk or some nasty infection. I can always cuddle with my babies and they smell lovely.

Maine Coon cats do not have a "stinky smell," if they are healthy. No cat has a "stinky smell" unless they are unwell.

If your cat smells bad, you need to take it to a vet immediately. I had a Maine Coon cat for 8 years, and she never smelled bad.

Have you checked your cat's behind? Maybe feces and/or urine has gotten stuck to the hair around the anus, in which case you can gently wash it off with a damp washcloth. There are also moist toweletts you can buy in most pet supply stores; these are like baby wipes. No need to rinse the cat's area after using the wipes. The wipes do a good job of cleaning a cat's fur.

I have two Maine Coon cats and they both have a distinctive odour. Not unpleasant but definitely different to any other cat I have had. My cats are very healthy, but their fur smells like a lot like dried horse sweat! Slightly salty, musky but a little like a sweaty horse blanket. You get used to it though.

There is probably a piece of poop caught in your cat's long hair near his/her rear end. You'll probably have to go through inch-by-inch to find it.

Because their hair is so thick that when and odor gets on their skin, it doesn't come out for a while, because it gets trapped.
