I am tempted to answer halvah, Cadbury Dairy Milk, peppermint sticks, licorice pipes, and gumdrops, but all of these are ancient, and you might believe me. It would be fun to see them wind up in a children's book that's trying to be contemporary, though.

Candy has gotten seriously weird in the US. If you look at what's on sale at the checkout stand, you'll see a good many electro-mechanical lollypops that spin, make electronic noises, and light up. I don't know how popular they are, but they sure stand out. Beyond that, two big manufacturers nowadays here are Hershey's (chocolate bars, Reeses peanut butter cups, and a host of recent innovations they should have left alone) and M&M Mars, who makes Snickers, Milky Way, M&M chocolate pieces (my favorite) and a bunch of others. Have a look at mm.com and hershey.com.

Nestle's used to be a big deal here, but has pretty much died out. Cadbury keeps trying, but has had no luck. They joined up with Peter Paul (Almond Joy and Mounds) and they're surviving, but barely.

The other answers have the brands down pretty well.

Depends on what kind of candy, which kids usually get, you're talking about
-gum: Big League Chew or you're generic gumball
-candy bar: Snickers, butterfingers
-chocolate bar: Hershey
-hard candy: Jolly Ranchers
-licorice (can't spell): probably Twizzlers
-misc.: Peanut Butter Cups, Lindt Truffles
