I just rescued a stray cat and I am taking her to the vets tomorrow (Wednesday) to get spayed and to have her shots done. She will be there all day (from 8am-7pm) Is there anything i can do to prep her for the surgery? What about things to make her more comfortable after surgery?

Thanks

Have her a quiet place to rest and some food and water. She'll be fine after a day or so. She'll just need to rest at first. I have heard not to feed them but last week I had my male and female both fixed and they ate that morning before I took them. The vet didn't mention anything about it. I'm so glad you're doing this. Love to kitty! ♥

Check with your vet's office. Usually, the night before surgery, vets instruct owners not to feed or water their cats the night before. I think you don't offer food or water after midnight. Best to check with the vet.

The reason for not offering food and water is so that the cat doesn't vomit it up during surgery, which can cause the cat to suffocate on its vomit, and possibly die.

Thank you for being a caring human being. I rescued a stray once. It turned into a wonderful, affectionate pet.

You are a good person for doing this! Good luck to you and your new kitty.

Find out if they want you to eliminate food and/or water after a certain time tonite. Take her to the vet in some type of box or cat carrier so she will feel more secure. Put a cloth in it for the return home. When she gets home, try to keep her in a quiet place, pet her to reassure her, put food and water nearby so she won't have to go too far for it the first day. TLC is the best remedy after surgery. Let her start getting around on her own and try not to pick her up too much for a couple of days or so.

You need to phone the vets and ask them these questions. It's usual not to give food for 12 hours prior to surgery, but don't be following the advice of people on here. Ring the vets now and ask, they should have told you. Make sure they go through post-op care with you before you take the cat home, and ask any other questions you have then as well.

Before the surgery just give her lots of special attention and treats. (Although I know at some point the night before you will have to stop feeding her).

After the surgery, just give her a warm comfortable spot to rest and recooperated. Do not keep her locked in a room or anything as it will stress her out some more.

I would just like to add thanks for taking in a stray.

the vets will take care of her hun dont worry, i was fretful when my tom cat had to stay overnight to be neutered, he was fine except for being a bit vocal about being left, they cant have food due to the meds, and if they could the vets would feed them ( mine do anyways), and she will be asleep after the surgery..just give her lots of love when she comes home, and she may be groggy and sleepy...just leave her be..mine was hungry, thirsty tired in that order....day later he was back to normal
