Go to Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs and select from the lefthandside, Add/Remove Windows Components. Wait until it populates the list, deselect Windows Media player and OK

Start > My Computer > Open Local Disc > click on Program Files, find the WMP file and delete it.
Choose which Media Player you want from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx?displang=en&qstechnology= scroll down select your media player to download it.
I use Media Player 11 and have never had any problem with it

You may have to Re-Install it, to be able to Uninstall it.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx
Once re-installed, it should show back up in Add/Remove programs.
Once Un-Installed........
Hopefully Windows Media Player 9 will work.
If it does not, go to...
MyComputer
C:\
Program Files
Windows Media Player
Then ... double click on the file named: setup_wm.exe
This should lauch WMP9 and allow you to set it back up
Good Luck
